Hurricane season starts today. Are you prepared for the hurricane season?

Homeowners & Property Owners.

It is extremely important for you to have records of your property’s condition in the event that you need to file a claim with your insurance company.

Before The Storm

• Take photos of your property- Interior of Home, Exterior of Home, Roof, Pool and Pool Area, Fencing, Trees, Front Yard, Back Yard.
• If you are not able to take photos before a storm, collect the most recent photos you have taken of your property.
• Document belongings- with proper documentation, you may also be able to recover lost expenses for home contents, personal property, and other items. Here is a list of some items to consider keeping receipts for or appraising: Televisions, Furniture, Jewelry, Artwork, Appliances, Computers, Antiques, Beds, Decks, Other Electronic Equipment
• Know what is in your homeowner's insurance policy.
• Talk to your agent to make sure you have Replacement Cost insurance and not actual cash value depreciation insurance.
• Have records of your property's condition in the event that you need to file a claim with your insurance company.
• Review your mold coverage.
• Review your flood coverage. This are normally separate insurance policies.
• Ask your insurance agent about coverage for water damage, law and ordinance, debris removal, and additional living expenses(ALE)
• Check your hurricane deductible, it can be much higher than your regular deductible.
• Have a plan to move yourself and your family - especially those with special needs.
• Have a portable radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio on hand to monitor important information.
• Homeowners who depend on well water should draw an emergency supply.
• Get cash or travelers checks in case banks or ATMs are not operational.
• Ensure all your electronic/mobile devices are fully charged.
• Gather important documentation and place in waterproof container.
• Make arrangements for pets; emergency shelters may not let you bring your animals with you.
• Find out where the nearest shelter is located and the routes to get there.
• Fill your automobile(s) with gas or ensure your electric vehicle is charged.
• If you have an emergency power source, learn how to use it properly.

After The Storm:

• When it is safe to do so, photograph your property’s Interior, Exterior, and Roof
• Consult with us, we have experienced in handling insurance claims before giving any recorded statements or meeting with an adjuster assigned to the claim.
• Call the insurance carrier and timely report the claim.
• Homeowners should obtain an inspection by a qualified contractor and/or roofer to assess whether the hurricane force winds have damaged or diminished the roofing system and building envelope.
• Take photos and record the questions and answers when talking to adjusters.
• Make sure to keep track of the name and number of every person you talk to at your insurance company.
• Check your Co-Insurance penalties.
• Make a copy of the insurance policy and keep it in a safe place.
• Check your policy coverages and sublimits.
• Just because water has not began to enter the structure does not mean that there is no damage to the property.
• We have seen too many homeowner claims where an engineer is hired months after the storm and the engineer states the damage preexisted the hurricane.
• For more information about the work we do with insurance claims go to WolfPublicAdjusters.com

Business Owners Preparedness Tips:

• Businesses should pay close attention to the storm's forecast over the weekend. The National Hurricane Center releases a new full advisory every 6 hours, at 5am, 11am, 5pm and 11pm EDT. They are issuing intermediate advisories every 3 hours, between the full advisories (1am, 8am, 1pm, 8pm EDT.)
• During this time, it's important to review your disaster and emergency communication plan.
• Backup all data on servers and personal computers and ensure remote access is available.
• Ensure your equipment is raised above potential flood levels.
• Review your insurance policies to mitigate any possible gaps in coverage.
• Protect and duplicate important business documents and records. Be sure they are accessible from anywhere.

15 Large Home Insurers Closed More Than Half of Claims in 2025 With No Payout Whatsoever

By The Weiss Ratings Press Team On April 16, 2026

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., April 16, 2026 — In response to President Trump’s recent post on Truth Social calling for greater transparency in homeowner claim denials1, Weiss Ratings, the nation’s only independent rating agency covering the insurance industry, has released today a list of 15 large U.S. insurance companies that closed at least half of policyholder claims with no payment in 2025.

Weiss Ratings founder Martin D. Weiss commented: “We welcome the Administration’s focus on the sharp rise in homeowner claim denials — a trend that is leaving many Americans without the protection they believed they had purchased. Denial levels of 50% or more raise serious questions about the reliability of coverage in today’s market, especially as many of these same insurers show increasing profitability.”

Mid-Century Insurance Company of Texas closed 78% of homeowner claims with no payment whatsoever; Lemonade Insurance (domiciled in New York) closed 64% of homeowner claims without payment; while Spinnaker Insurance (IL) closed 61%.

Citizens Property Insurance — Florida’s state-backed insurer created to stabilize the market — also denied 61% of claims, underscoring that even public-sector solutions are not immune to the broader breakdown in claims reliability.

Most notably, three California insurers are among the large companies that denied at least half of claims — Fire Insurance Exchange (55% denial rate), Farmers Insurance Exchange (55%), and Stillwater Insurance Co. (50%).

Many of these denials came in the wake of California wildfires due to smoke-damage policies of the California FAIR Plan (CPF), which covered only smoke that could be seen or smelled, ignoring microscopic contamination, a violation of the state’s mandatory “all loss by fire” standard. Meanwhile, State Farm of California has been under active investigation for failing to properly investigate smoke damage, refusing to pay for testing, disregarding toxic residue findings, and underpaying claims after major wildfires.

Overall, 15 large U.S. insurers, including State Farm of Florida and other State Farm subsidiaries, flat-out denied at least 50% of homeowner and farmowner claims in 2025. Meanwhile, nearly all reported good profits, derived especially from investment income earned from premiums collected in advance.

Just a reminder that numerous disaster preparedness items are tax-free year-round!

Use today as an opportunity to look through your supplies and check for any items that may be damaged, expired, not working properly, or missing altogether. If something needs to be replaced, try to do so throughout the year the sooner the better, since disasters can happen at any time and often with little warning.

Staying prepared doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small updates and smart purchases over time can make a big difference when it matters most.

As the weather cools down, many people rely on portable heaters to stay warm. Here are 5 quick safety tips to help keep your home comfortable and safe:

⚠️ Use space heaters safely: Plug them directly into a WALL OUTLET (not power strips) and never leave them running unattended or on while you sleep.

🏠 Clear the area: Keep furniture, blankets, and decorations at least 3 feet away from space heaters and heating vents.

🔄 Start slow if unused: If a heater hasn’t been used in a while, run it intermittently at first to help burn off dust and avoid strong odors.

👃 Don’t panic at a dusty smell: A brief burning or dusty odor can be normal when starting up. If you see smoke, smell gas, or the odor persists, turn it off and check for issues.

🧯 Check safety features: Use heaters with automatic shutoff and avoid models with damaged cords or missing parts.

Stay warm, stay safe, and check on loved ones who may be using space heaters this week!

Florida’s once-struggling property insurance market has hit a new milestone: Citizens Property Insurance Corporation is no longer the state’s largest insurer for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you decide to leave your boat at a dock during a hurricane, you’ll need to devise a docking plan that’s liable to be far different than your normal docking arrangement. By the time preparations are completed, your boat should resemble a spider suspended in the center of a large web. This web will allow the boat to rise on the surge, be bounced around by the storm, and still remain in position.
