Most people see a simple bathroom and think it’s a small plumbing job.

But in commercial and municipal plumbing, nothing is ever that simple.

This project started with building a restroom for lift station operators. What followed was a 160-foot sewer run, excavating more than 14 feet deep, battling groundwater, uncovering massive rock formations, and spending weeks in the field solving problems one challenge at a time.

This is the side of plumbing that many people never see. It’s not just installing pipe. It’s planning, excavation, safety, teamwork, and adapting when the job site doesn’t cooperate.

I’ve been fortunate to work on projects ranging from residential homes to commercial buildings and municipal lift stations, and experiences like this are what shaped me into the plumber, instructor, and consultant I am today.

Behind every finished project is a story of persistence, problem-solving, and refusing to quit when the work gets tough.

That’s what real plumbing looks like.

A luxury home.

Two tankless water heaters.

A hot water recirculation system.

And STILL a 5 to 10 minute wait for hot water in the master bathroom.

I was originally working on the sister house across the street during the top-out phase when I was asked to take a look at this completed home’s hot water system.

What I found was a reminder that plumbing is not just about installing equipment.

It’s about understanding how the entire system is designed to operate.

The home had dual tankless water heaters, but the units were not communicating properly. After isolating the controls and testing the configuration, the behavior of the system changed dramatically.

The lesson?

The most expensive equipment in the world cannot make up for a system that isn’t operating the way it was intended.

This is the side of plumbing I love the most:

Diagnostics.
Critical thinking.
Real-world problem solving.

I was originally working on the sister house directly across the street during the top-out phase when I was invited to walk through this completed luxury home and take a look at a hot water issue.

This home had everything you would expect: dual tankless water heaters, multiple bathrooms, a hot water recirculation system, and high-end finishes throughout.

Yet the master bathroom was still taking 5 to 10 minutes to receive hot water.

To compensate, an additional mini tankless heater had been installed inside the master toilet room.

That immediately raised an important question for me:

Why would a home equipped with this level of plumbing infrastructure still struggle to deliver hot water efficiently?

As I began inspecting the system, I discovered the two primary tankless units were not communicating properly. Once I started isolating the controls and testing the configuration, the system began behaving very differently.

Moments like these remind me that plumbing is far more than installing equipment. The real skill is understanding how the entire system is designed to operate and being able to diagnose problems when performance doesn’t match expectations.

After 26+ years in the trade, these are still the types of challenges I enjoy the most.

Experience matters.
Diagnostics matter.
Understanding the system matters.

Gas pipe sizing isn’t something you guess at—it’s something you calculate.

In this video, I break down the two code-approved methods used to properly size fuel gas piping systems:

A shower pan is only as good as the foundation underneath it.

One of the most common mistakes I see in the field is skipping the pre-slope (pro slope) beneath the shower liner. If water ever gets beneath the tile assembly, that slope is what directs it to the drain instead of allowing it to sit and create long-term moisture problems.

In this series, I’m breaking down the shower pan installation process step by step—from the foundation all the way to a properly built shower base.

Before the shower liner is installed, a pre-slope must be created to direct water toward the drain. This step is critical to the long-term performance of the shower system and is often misunderstood or overlooked.

My goal isn’t just to show the installation process—it’s to explain the reasoning behind each step so apprentices, plumbers, contractors, and homeowners can better understand what makes a quality installation.

Not every plumbing student gets hands-on experience with gas piping.

In this lab exercise, our students assembled a gas piping system complete with valves, unions, gauges, and test connections before performing a pressure test to verify the integrity of the installation.

Anyone can tighten fittings together. The real lesson is understanding how to build it correctly, pressure test it properly, and identify issues before the system ever goes into service.

This is the type of practical, real-world training we focus on at Florida International Training Institute—building confidence, troubleshooting skills, and professional habits that carry directly into the field.

Build it right. Test it right.
