We asked Eileen Shields, Ardurra Project Director, a simple question: What's the most important thing a leader can do for their team? Her answer reminded us that great leadership isn't always loud — sometimes it's just showing up, clearing the way, and making sure people know they're supported. Here's what she had to say.

National Preparedness Month is a reminder that readiness starts long before a disaster strikes. It's built through the planning, training, and coordination communities put in place before an emergency happens.

For years, Ardurra has partnered with the City of Bellevue, WA, to strengthen the Transportation Department's emergency preparedness. Our work has included:

• Updating Transportation Coordination Center procedures and CEMP essential support functions
• Developing disaster debris management, hazard mitigation and community wildfire protection plans
• Creating a training and exercise plan
• Facilitating tabletop exercises to put plans and procedures into practice

It's not the kind of work that makes headlines. But it's the kind of work that makes communities safer.

Anyone who drives westbound SR 836 in Miami, FL, knows the pain: 7 lanes merging down to 4 right at the NW 97th Ave toll plaza — a nightmare during afternoon peak hour on a corridor carrying 150,000+ vehicles a day.

Inspired by a conversation at the FDOT Construction Symposium, our team sketched a simple idea: add an extra lane through the toll plaza. What started as a sketch became a proposal to the Greater Miami Expressway (GMX) Agency, and in just 3 months, we took it from concept to construction.

The result: a 5th westbound lane through the toll gantry — serving a corridor that carries approximately 150,000 to 170,000 vehicles per day — opened just in time for the fall school rush and 4-5 years ahead of schedule.

Ardurra’s Young Professionals Network (YPN), an employee-led community for early-career professionals, has dedicated August as its Month of Giving Back, and we’re proud to see YPN members supporting communities through service.

Our Dallas office partnered with Feed My Starving Children, packing nutritious meals for children and families facing hunger.

Our Oklahoma City office volunteered at the City Care Night Shelter in OKC, helping serve meals to people experiencing homelessness.

Both of our Houston offices volunteered with Books for Development, supporting access to educational resources around the world.

Our San Antonio office joined the San Antonio Food Bank, helping pack an incredible 11,000 pounds of dry goods for families in need.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy throughout the Month of Giving Back. It’s great to see YPN members coming together, building connections and supporting organizations doing important work in their communities.

Congratulations to Franklin Torrealba, PE, ENV SP, on being named ASCE Miami-Dade Branch's 2025-2026 Engineer of the Year!

Franklin has spent nearly 40 years shaping how South Florida gets clean water and reliable infrastructure — over 500 projects, more than 185 miles of pipeline design, and a hand in some of the region's largest water system rehabilitation programs. But ask anyone who's worked with him, and they'll tell you the numbers aren't really the story. It's how he shows up and his immense passion for his work: mentoring younger engineers, supporting FIU students on their capstone projects, and sponsoring the next generation to get involved in ASCE the way he did decades ago.

This one's well-earned. Congrats, Franklin! We’re proud to call you part of .

Water doesn't stop once it leaves the tap. It moves through one connected system that most people never think about.

A few years back, our team completed the Marsh Creek Stormwater Mitigation & Rain Garden in Sandy Springs, GA, a project that's a good reminder of how tightly these four pieces depend on each other. Instead of just burying a flood control system underground, we designed bioretention cells and a fountain-fed pool into a public park, with walking trails and signage that teach residents and schoolchildren about water quality along the way.

It's one example of how these systems connect:
→ Water — treatment & delivery that protects public health
→ Wastewater — collection & treatment that protects the environment
→ Reclaimed Water — giving water a second life for long-term sustainability
→ Stormwater — managing the next storm before it becomes a crisis

It's World Water Week — a good moment to recognize the engineers thinking about this whole system, not just one piece of it.

In 2015, a resort mountain airport in Heber City, Utah brought Ardurra on as its engineering consultant. Nobody was talking about the Winter Olympics...yet.

After years of population growth, the airport's future needs were becoming impossible to ignore. In 2019, Ardurra began a planning effort to reevaluate the airport. Through a comprehensive, 4-year master planning effort, Ardurra confirmed the airport would need an Airport Reference Code (ARC) upgrade and identified the infrastructure improvements required to support that
transition and future demand.

The plan outlined a major transformation ahead: a relocated runway, a relocated taxiway, increased separation from the adjacent highway, and other critical improvements needed to position the airport for 2034 and beyond.

Heber City has now selected Ardurra to lead that work. That's $80 million in capital improvements, five years of implementation, and one major deadline nobody wants to miss.
This is the work we love. Taking an airport we've grown alongside since 2015 and helping prepare it for one of the biggest stages in the world.

Happy National Aviation Day. Here's to the next five years.
