If a tree is touching or leaning toward overhead wires, stop right there.

That is not a job for a ladder and a pole saw. Wires can look harmless and still carry current, and a limb that drops onto them can pull a line down or hurt whoever is holding the saw.

In this photo, our crew works from a bucket truck in a bare tree that stands close to overhead lines. Every cut is planned with the wires in mind.

From the ground, you can look, take a photo, and keep people and pets clear. The rest needs a professional.

Before anyone picks up a saw this fall, stand on the ground and look up at the whole tree for two minutes.

Ask one question: what is each cut supposed to fix? A dead limb over the roof is a reason. A branch rubbing another branch is a reason. "It looks too full" is not. Every cut leaves a wound, and a wound with no purpose is just an open door for decay.

Notice the pale, freshly cut areas in this crown reduction. Each cut was chosen for a reason before it was made.

This is what a fallen tree looks like once it meets a house: heavy trunk sections lying across the roof, and a crew in helmets working out where each cut can safely go.

A certified arborist consultation is meant to happen long before this. We walk the property, look at the crown, trunk, and roots, and note which trees stand over a house, driveway, or play area. Then we explain, in plain terms, what can wait, what needs work, and what is fine as it is.

Plenty of trees only need a look. The look is the point.

The most common mistake with a tall arborvitae hedge looks sensible. It has gotten too tall, so someone cuts it back to a flat, bare face. Here is the catch: arborvitae generally does not grow back from old wood with no green on it. Cut past the living foliage and that brown patch tends to stay brown for years, sometimes for good.

The safer habit is small, regular trims inside the green, so the hedge never needs a drastic one. A tall hedge beside a house also means ladders and pole saws, which is a job for a trained crew.

Once the leaves come down, a tree finally shows its hand.

Bare branches let us see dead limbs, cracks where branches join, crossing limbs rubbing each other, and old cuts that never healed. In summer, green hides all of it.

That is why fall is such a good time to have mature trees looked at, before winter wind and wet snow put weight on a weak spot. A few minutes under the tree with a phone camera can show you what changed since spring.

This ornamental tree, shown in spring bloom, splits into stems low on the trunk. That makes it a good tree to check, and you can do it from the lawn with both feet on the ground.

Walk a full circle and look at where the stems join. A smooth, rounded joint is a good sign. A tight V with bark folded into the seam, or a crack along it, is worth a photo and a note of the date. Fall is a good time, because the leaves are still on and the shape of the crown is easy to read.

Look at the ropes. A climber on a big tree is roped in, and the lines running out of the frame are what let a crew control every piece that comes down.

That is most of what a careful removal really is: deciding where each cut goes, where each piece lands, and what it could touch on the way. The saw is the quick part. The planning is the job.

We also decide from the ground first whether a tree really needs to come down. If it can be pruned and kept, we would always rather save a sound tree.

That tidy mound of fresh mulch piled against the trunk? It looks like good care. It is one of the most common ways a young tree gets hurt.

Mulch held against the bark stays wet, and wet bark starts to rot. A deep pile also holds water around the roots and keeps air out of the soil. The tree can look fine for a few seasons while the damage builds.

A better ring is wide and flat, about 2 to 3 inches deep, and pulled back so the base of the trunk stays visible and dry.

Look at what was holding this tree up: a flat plate of soil, turf, and roots, not a post going straight down. When strong wind and wet ground work together, that plate can lift out in one piece.

The warning signs usually show at the base first. Soil heaved on one side, a trunk that leans more than it used to, or new cracks in the ground near the roots. After a heavy rain, take a quick look at the bases of your biggest trees. If something looks different, we can inspect it and tell you what we see.

Look at where this trunk split. The stems tore apart at the union, and the wood inside is dark and crumbly, not clean and pale.

That is the part to check on your own trees this fall, and you can do it from the ground. Stand back and look at every spot where a trunk forks into two stems of similar size. Check for a crack in the seam, bark pinched tight between the stems, or dark staining and holes in the fork.

Take a photo of each one and note the date, so you can tell next month whether anything changed.
