The Anders Dome

The Anders Dome Geodesic dome made in 2015-17 by the family living in it with help from many local (and not so local) helpers. Construction kit from Natural Spaces Domes in MN.

Ongoing necessary improvements as time, money, and help become available.

What’s it like building a geodesic dome with four young kids? I think this video pretty much sums that up…

Here’s a fun Timelapse of our dome raising weekend from 2015

Does that dog look like she’s feeling guilty about the angle the tree finds itself this morning? Good thing it’s tied to the dome from the top!

The dome’s 2019 tree has arrived from the wonderful local tree farm. 11ft works quite well. Last year I overdid it on size but this year I think I got it just right.

This was my birthday in 2015. It’s frequently hard for me to fathom how far I’ve come since then. This incredible home I’ve been able to bring into existence for my family was still mostly a dream then. It existed in the endless hours of drawings I did, painstakingly adjusting every wall and door and window and recycled cabinet. How will the sunlight enter the space? How will it feel to move through from one room to the next? It existed mostly in my heart for a long, long time. In this view you can see the used corner tub approximately in its place in the master bathroom alongside the future kitchen space with its motley crew of used cabinets. It was such a huge adventure to create this home and I am so very glad I was able to pull together the resources and support and courage to bring it into reality. Sometimes I have no idea how I managed to survive it all. I am so grateful and I try not to take it for granted.

Cupola framing work has resumed with fervor! Man, I love doing this stuff. Wall #2 of 5 is complete, and I’m hoping to knock out a third before the end of today. There was a bit of a detour of effort to install plumbing for a shower in the upstairs bath, which is now working well thanks to some kind phone guidance from Nick Durie last weekend. Of course that project isn’t 100% done but it’s functional so I’m back to the cupola before winter arrives full force. (By the way, I realize this is exactly how things never seem to get quite fully finished around here. I need a Finishing Fairy.)

UPDATE: one more hour put in and wall #3 is complete! Very happy with the progress this weekend. And the shower afterwards was fantastic.

The dome has a happy looking new friend with a lovely blue hat. Once the final hookup is made on Friday we will be all set for final inspection and on towards a toasty winter! Of course I still have quite a bit to finish in the cupola . . . stay tuned.

The dome is getting its heating upgrade! With thanks to the Home Improvement Program through Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley, Colonial Heating has been here the last two days installing our new furnace and ductwork. They even did the proper dryer venting for us so it’s not dropping straight into the basement anymore. Yay!
