What you're looking at is what holds your concrete together for the next 30 years.

Rebar grid — tied by hand before a single drop of concrete gets poured. Its job is to keep the slab from cracking when New England's freeze-thaw cycle shifts the ground underneath.

Once it's poured and finished, you'd never know it's there. But the reason that slab still looks clean in 10 years is the steel underneath holding it all together.
Not the glamorous part of the job. But the part that matters most.

Meet of of the workhorses.

We'd be lost without this skid steer. Cuts hours off the dig, moves earth fast, and lets us get a proper foundation laid without tearing up your whole yard in the process.

Here's the thing most people don't realize about concrete: the slab you see is only as good as what's underneath it. If the subgrade isn't dug to the right depth, properly compacted, and prepped clean, you'll see cracks in a few winters no matter how good the pour looks on day one.

That's why the dig matters as much as the finish.
Right tools, right prep, a foundation that holds up to 40 New England winters — that's how it should be done.

Those lines you see cut into a concrete slab aren't decoration.
They're called control joints. Sometimes relief cuts.

Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with the weather. It's gonna crack — that's not a question. The joints are how we tell it where.

Cut them deep enough, spaced right, and the crack happens inside the joint where you'll never see it. Skip them or cut them too shallow and the crack goes wherever it wants. Usually right across the middle.

See that channel down the middle? That's a trench drain.

Most patios slope away from the house — usually a quarter inch per foot. That's enough to move water off the slab before it pools.

But when you've got a patio tucked between a house and a fence, or up against a slope, gravity alone won't cut it. Water's got nowhere to go. So you cut a channel into the slab itself and let it run somewhere useful — usually tied into a drywell or daylighted out to the yard.

Drainage isn't an afterthought. It's the first thing we figure out before a single bag of concrete shows up.

Did this one about a year back. Patio was cracked up pretty bad — she said she hadn't had folks over in I don't know how long.

Drove by last weekend. Grandkids out there with popsicles.
That's the good part of this work.
