DEADLY ROSE DISEASE..😲

This is a rose disease for which there is no cure.. Rose Rosette disease. The plant must be destroyed. It's caused by a virus spread by a mite. What makes it worse, by the time the easily-identifiable growth shows up, the plant has had it for a while and has probably spread it to nearby roses.
No rose variety is immune.

Pruning the top 1/3 of the bush should remove the overwintering mites. Read the link and watch it's video.

This video was created by Gary Bauchan (USDA, ARS) as part of the Combating rose rosette SCRI project. The goal is to learn more about the mite, Phyllocoptes fructiphilus. This video shows some of the places where the mites can be found. The video has been colorized to better show the mites, eggs, s...

Do you know about the SECOND PEAK SEASON FOR TICK ACTIVITY?😲
Adults have a second peak season in the fall. Here in New England, adult deer ticks re-emerged in force for the fall season right around October 15th. These ticks will be active for at least another month, or until the ground is covered in snow.

FALL IS A GOOD TIME TO HAVE YOUR SOIL TESTED to determine if liming is needed to raise soil pH (most New England soils have low pH). Low soil pH affects nutrient availability to the plants. Applying lime now allows sufficient time for soil reactions to occur to correct acidity levels for the next growing season.

REMOVE NEW FLOWERS ON TOMATO PLANTS. Tomato fruits require eight to nine weeks to ripen after flower set. Flowers that form in August will not have enough time to ripen before frost. Removing flower clusters that form in August will give the remaining fruit a greater chance to ripen.

APRIL PRUNING: April is a great time for pruning paniculata and 'Annabelle' hydrangeas, butterfly bush, buttonbush, summersweet clethra, sweetspire, and summer flowering spirea. These shrubs form their flower buds on the current season’s stem growth. Pruning these in winter or early spring leads to vigorous stem growth in spring and summer that contains buds that will flower in summer and early fall.

BEWARE...Yet another poison in our environments!😵

Some landscape maintenance companies are using Plant Growth Regulators on plantings so they spend less time on pruning. Big ads from the chemical manufacturers are pushing the products in trade magazines.

Check with your service.

GRUBS....No Poisons Needed!

Chemical poisons kill earthworms and beneficial insects as well as grubs. Safe treatments such as "milky spore". B.T. (bacillus thuringiensis) or predatory nematodes that kill grubs specifically. Once in your soil, they destroy grubs for years without harming beneficials, including bees. June / July is the ideal time to treat.

GardensAlive.com is an excellent source for the above. Read their recommendations because the exact variety of nematode, for example, will vary depending on the area of the country. And, of course, be sure to follow the instructions. Watering in the treatment is very, very important to get the remedy down to the depth of the grubs.

No 'Volcano' Mulching
Fall is the time to prepare trees and shrubs for the upcoming winter. If you are mulching, do not place mulch directly against tree bases. Mulch piled around plants may serve as lodging for bark and stem eating rodents such as voles and mice. Avoid 'volcano' mulching where the mulch is piled into a large cone shape around tree trunks. Pull mulch away from the base of the trunk.
