It's a bit quiet round the meadow in early Spring...but we are prepparing for the sprouts of Spring. Here is a designed Betula populifolia "fence" awaiting the company of a field of flowers and grasses.

It may look like an abstract collage, but it is part of the meadow process. This meadow has just gone through it's annual mow, and is now ready to accept the rays of the sun to warm the soil and encourage new growth of the native perennial grasses and forbs that lie below. Dramatic, I know. But, just wait for the show to come!

Another Mountain Mint, perhaps a perfect plant post for St. Patrick's Day! Of course, we won't see Pycnanthemum muticum in bloom until this summer. But, when we do, there may be no better plant for pollinators pound for pound. Seen here is a Cabbage White Butterfly enjoying some minty nectar. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Slender Mountain Mint, Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, provides a delicate, unexpected texture in the meadow setting. The almost needle-like leaves are seen here beneath the tiny flowers with a bumble bee visitor.

Mountain Mint! Even the common name is great. The Pycnanthemum genus has several species native to the northeast that we love to weave into our meadows. Pollinators genuinely go nuts for the delicate flowers. Nuts! Here is a honey bee (not native, but c'mon) digging in. We'll share several Mountain Mint species and more beneficial pollinators in the coming days.

We love mints...because deer hate mints. In a meadow tapestry, mints weave in beetween other species, and deer have a tough time taking a bite without coming up minty. Here Monarda didyma (bee balm in pink) and Pycnanthemum muticum (broadleaf mountain mint with silver bracts, lower right) even add a minty bouquet to the air when one breathes deeply at the height of summer.

The design of the gently serpentine bridle path at Elation Farm creates visual interest, while the wide path is easily mowed, giving a clean, architectural border to the wilder nature of the meadow wildflowers and grasses. Win, win, win.

Making a meadow means crafting space...meandering paths to wander and pocket rooms to linger. Here a subtle twist in the path creates a bit of mystery beyond the beebalm in the foreground.
