🚽 The difference is in what you don’t see.

Today’s “simple toilet replacement” turned into anything but.

After removing the old toilet, I found a new tile floor had been installed over two previous layers of flooring, leaving the original closet fl**ge more than an inch below the finished floor. Instead of fixing the problem correctly, someone had stacked multiple fl**ge extenders on top of each other and none of it was properly secured. As soon as everything was removed, the old fl**ge also broke away from the original copper riser. Uh oh!

Well…… This is where experience matters!

Rather than taking another shortcut, we rebuilt the support the right way. I fabricated a custom support ring with Pt wood and securely fastened it to the sub floor where the 1”+ void was. I Used an additional 2x10 across the underside of the bay below the toilet for additional structure support. I then installed a new fl**ge at the proper finished-floor height, connected it correctly with a mission clamp, and then reset the toilet on a solid, code-conscious foundation.

The customer will probably never see the work hidden beneath the toilet and that’s exactly the point. The best plumbing repairs are often the ones you never have to think about again.

Water Heater Upgrade Completed

This third-floor apartment had a 20yr old 80-gallon electric water heater serving a small kitchenette, one bathroom, and laundry. Not only was the tank significantly oversized for the application, but it also lacked important safety features that could have helped prevent costly water damage. It also showed signs of leaking at any moment from multiple points.

When we arrived, we found:
❌ No safety drain pan beneath the water heater
❌ No automatic leak detection or shutoff protection
❌ Electrical concerns that required correction
❌ An oversized tank consuming more space and energy than necessary

We replaced it with a properly sized 40-gallon A.O. Smith electric water heater and upgraded the installation with:

✅ Leak detection and automatic shutoff protection
✅ Safety drain pan installation
✅ Updated electrical connections
✅ Clean, professional piping
✅ More efficient sizing for the apartment’s actual hot water demand

Being located on the third floor, protecting the property from potential water damage was a major priority. The new system provides added peace of mind, improved efficiency, and reliable hot water for years to come.

Another “professional install” we came across this week… 👀

Customer called us out because parts of the house were overheating while other areas barely got warm. After digging into the system, we found all THREE heating zones and circulators wired together with no proper zone control at all.

Even worse, all three thermostats were tied together — meaning no matter which thermostat called for heat, every circulator kicked on at the same time. The result? Constant circulation issues, uneven heating, wasted energy, and major comfort problems throughout the home.

We also found a small section of baseboard that had been added as its own separate zone when it should have been tied into the existing first-floor loop. That unnecessary extra zone only complicated the system further.

We corrected the wiring, installed proper zone controls, rewired all thermostat connections individually, cleaned up the circulator setup with new 007e pumps, and made several additional upgrades to get the system operating the way it should have from day one.

This is why proper hydronic design and wiring matters. A heating system can have quality equipment, but if it’s piped or wired incorrectly, the entire system suffers.

If your home has uneven heat, strange cycling, or zones that don’t operate correctly, it may not be the boiler itself — it could be the installation.
