Many of the plants you thought had winter killed are now emerging. Delayed by the long wet winter. Other plants that did winterkill such as a lot of ice plants were killed by the winter wetness. Many Xeric plants are native of areas with arid winters. So in your planning and planting for winter survival if you want to play it on the safe side, here are a couple of additional things you can do.
When adjusting the soil mix in your hole, mix in a higher rate of course organic matter from 33% to 50% and even 70%. Second plant your perennials in an elevated area such as on a berm. Remember, most perennials are native of hilly terrain with porous soils. Third, Leave your foliage on for the winter. (Agastache Coronado Red Pictured. More than anything, true Xeriscaping is about cultural methods. Not rocks, not parking strips, not drip irrigation. It is about watering deeply less often, like once a week, every two weeks and three and four weeks depending upon the plants. Watering deeply so that the moisture is driven down into the cool zone, so that when you let the water dry down between waterings, the roots get to grow down into the cool zone looking for the moisture. It's about training your roots. Then it's about mulching heavily. To conserve the moisture and keep the roots cooler. Then last of all, it's about faith, faith that if you do these things, nature will take over and give you a low water use garden.
