Hooker Hollow Life is a little slower here. Hooker Hollow is home to honeybees, happy hens, wildflowers, herbs, and the simple joys of Appalachian living.

Hooker Hollow is a pristine 74 acre property on the middle fork of the Reddies River in Wilkes County NC. Nestled in a cove on the Blue Ridge escarpment, this property is capable of yielding beautiful garden harvests and has recently decided to become home to honey bees. d sourwood honey.. Hooker Hollow is the long time dream of its owner, Melissa Hooker. Her great grandfather, Lerton Wright Hooker, was a master gardener and served as RVP for Region 9 (Illinois) with The American Iris Society. She is following along his foot steps of having her own garden, named after his, The Hooker Gardens, in Spring Valley CA.

❤️ Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) ❤️

One of North Carolina’s most breathtaking native wildflowers is in bloom here at Ho**er Hollow.

With its brilliant scarlet blooms, Cardinal Flower lights up the summer landscape and serves as an important nectar source for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. It naturally grows along streams, ponds, and other moist places throughout our state, making it right at home in the Appalachian foothills.

Long before modern medicine, Indigenous peoples recognized this remarkable plant and used it in traditional herbal practices for a variety of purposes. Today, it’s appreciated more for its beauty and ecological value, as the plant contains powerful compounds that should never be used medicinally without expert guidance.

Around here, we’re simply grateful to watch this North Carolina native thrive and to see the hummingbirds return to visit its fiery red blossoms.

Sometimes the most extraordinary things have been growing here all along. ❤️🌿

The herb garden is finally taking off and there’s an old Appalachian tradition of gathering herbs early in the morning, when they’re believed to be at their most fragrant and full of their natural oils. So that’s when I’ll be out picking 🌿🌱

Available:

🌿 Peppermint
🌿 Lemon Balm
🌿 Anise Hyssop
🌿 Bee Balm
🌿 Catnip (Catmint)
🌿 Dill
🌿 Rosemary (limited)
🌿 Thyme (limited)
🌿 Oregano (limited)

🌸 I’ll also have:
• Fresh edible nasturtium leaves & flowers
• Nasturtium plants
• Small hand-tied bouquets with Black-eyed Susans, Purple Coneflowers, Bee Balm, and whatever else is blooming that week.
