A couple more warm sunny days, and a big south wind, and the ice should be just about gone. I'm guessing May 1st, which has been about the average date for my nearly 50 years of tracking ice-out at Nahmakanta Lake.

Here's a beautiful male brookie in spawning colors from a small backcountry trout lake near our camp. We had an incredible day there late last season, just about the time the fall foliage was at it's peak. We caught and released close to a dozen about this size, all on topwater flies. What a way to end the year !

While doing some off-trail bushwacking, I just happened upon this cave a long ways from the nearest blazed trail. Interesting geologic formations are fairly common in the glaciated hills around Nahmakanta Lake, but this one's kinda special. It's an almost perfectly formed granite lean-to. It's not likely many people have ever seen it. Who knows, but I imagine it could have been an emergency shelter for some ancient native hunter. (photos: Ed & Sharon Malley)

A couple of lake trout (aka "togue" up here in Maine) caught right out front of camp on May 15th and headed for the grill. Both salmon and togue are "on top" and taking streamers, lures and smelt.
