Born To Be Wild

There is a wildness in youth that cannot be taught.

Maximus, young and full of life, moves through the goldenrod and dunes of Assateague as though the whole island was placed here just for him.

The wind in his mane. The wild beneath his feet.
And a whole life still waiting beyond the next dune.

Stay wild, Maximus. Keep looking up. 🐎🌾

A minute of today's sunrise at Cape Henlopen State Park, with the second sailboat to wash ashore along our coast.

Prayers for the captain and his ship. From what I’ve read, the vessel struck a shoal off the coast while making its way toward Baltimore.

Considering the seas we’ve experienced with these recent nor’easter conditions, I can only imagine how many terrifying moments the captain endured during that journey.

Thankfully, it sounds like the owner is working to have the vessel towed once the sea conditions settle down enough to safely reach it.

A beautiful sunrise this morning, but a sobering reminder of just how powerful and unforgiving the Atlantic can be.

Have a blessed day ahead from Mister Friskey Hooves and I. 🐴

This handsome fella was simply soaking in the morning sunshine, basking in the warmth of a beautiful autumn day.

I often wonder if those moments of sunshine mean just a little more to the animals who call Assateague Island home. Soon enough, the island will trade its warm summer days for biting winds, cold rain, and the long chill of winter.

And yet, they remain.

Their coats grow thicker. Their spirits remain wild. And somehow, they continue to weather whatever the island brings their way.

There is something humbling about watching them prepare for another winter, knowing they have no shelter to retreat to and no warmth waiting for them at the end of the day. Just the herd, the island, and the will to endure.

So for today, I’m thankful for this little moment of sunshine on Mister Friskey Hooves.

May it warm him, and may the days ahead be gentle to him and the entire herd.

Stay safe out there, MFH.

Annie Laurie up front, with her beautiful tribe behind her, in a memorable moment from this past summer.

It’s been a few weeks since anyone has seen this sweet girl, and I can’t help but wonder how she is doing. Annie Laurie is such a beautiful mare, known for her striking bi-color white and tan mane and those beautiful white hindquarters. I’m praying she is safe, healthy, and somewhere out there finding shelter from the elements.

My thoughts and prayers are with Annie Laurie and the entire herd as Assateague braces for the coastal low moving through over the next couple of days. Coastal flooding will certainly make life challenging for the horses until this storm finally pushes out to sea later this week.

They endure so much, yet somehow continue to remind us of the strength and beauty of the wild.

This week, I’d like to begin by wishing my cousin Chris and his wife, Rexxi, a lifetime of happiness together.

This was the moon rising over us Saturday night during their family reception, a beautiful waxing gibbous glowing at 65% illumination.

But as beautiful as the moon was, the company beneath it was even better.

I’m so grateful for family, and especially for nights like this when cousins, children, and generations can come together to celebrate something truly special. With a family as large as ours, I didn’t get the chance to say hello to everyone, but simply being together meant more than enough.

My son and wife especially loved the fire trucks and getting a tour of the firehouse. Watching our children make their own memories alongside the family made the evening even more meaningful.

Chris and Rexxi, may your life together be filled with love, laughter, good health, and countless beautiful moments beneath skies like this one.

Cheers to you both, and to the blessing of family.

Happy Friday from Assateague Island legend, Assateague Lightning!

A kind reminder that every day is a gift.

This beautiful stallion is truly one of a kind. Known by many for the signature “bolt” on his hindquarter, Lightning was one of the dominant stallions on the island for years. This summer, I grew concerned as he was limping badly and showing signs of decline. Younger stallions have since taken many of his mares, and Lightning is now mostly solitary out on the OSV.

So, it was incredibly good to see him getting around so well recently. From the limp I saw this summer, he has made leaps and bounds. He looked healthy... I truly pray we have many more years with this beautiful stallion.

The hard truth is that solitude can make these horses more vulnerable. They lose the safety that comes with numbers. I pray for Lightning's safety this winter, and for the entire Maryland and Virginia herds of Assateague Island.

I suppose the lesson in the tea leaves is simple: take life slow and enjoy the moments. Tomorrow isn't promised to any of us, man or mammal.

Cheers to a great weekend. Remember what is good in your life and cherish it like tomorrow isn't a given.

For me, that is my beautiful wife, my loving son, and my family.

Herring Point Sunrise

Today's sunrise comes to you from beautiful Herring Point at Cape Henlopen State Park.

After yesterday's warmth, the winds are picking up and the temperatures are beginning to tumble. A reminder that autumn has a way of arriving right when it feels like summer might stick around a little longer.

Cheers to a pleasant, peaceful, and productive day ahead. Make the most of the moments you're given, get outside when you can, and take a little time to appreciate the beauty around you.

Moody Coastal Blues

Somewhere between the sea and the sky,
there is a quiet kind of beauty.

A weathered whelk resting in the sand, surrounded by shades of blue, soft gray, and moody coastal light.

The colors felt like the ocean before a storm… deep, peaceful, and full of stories.

Sometimes the smallest treasures along the shore hold the most beautiful reminders to slow down, look closer, and appreciate what the tide leaves behind.
