Eastern bumblebees and a two spotted bumblebee on some late summer blooms.

Ever since we have reduced invasive plants at these sites and replaced them with native plants, we have seen an increase in pollinator diversity. Plants are the foundation of life. Healthy insect and animal populations rely on healthy native plant communities.

Our stewardship crew spotted this Hummingbird clearwing moth, Hemaris thysbe, this week at Lincoln Creek. This member of the sphinx moth family is unique in that it is active during daytime, preferring broad sunlight. It uses its long proboscis to drink nectar from flowers. This one was found on wild bergamot, Monarda fistulosa. The presence of insect species like this one show that land stewardship support insect populations, which are essential for supporting healthy animal populations, particularly birds.

These unique insects lay their eggs on their host plants and once hatched, they feed for two to three weeks in their larval caterpillar stage. Next, they fall to the ground and form cocoons in plant debris and leaf litter.

Adults emerge and begin flying in early spring, with their activity peaking later in summer when monarda is blooming.

Attract this unique and wonderful pollinator to your garden by planting wild bergamot, phlox, native honeysuckles, and vervains. And remember, allow leaf litter to remain overwinter and in early spring until night temperatures are consistently above 50F.

This plant might be small but it is very special! American wild mint, Mentha canadensis, is a wild mint that is native to the eastern United States. It thrives in wet, sunny soils. It has a very pleasant, sweet mint aroma and adds more than just visual interest to landscapes.

Adding this species to your garden or landscape is a sure way to level up your plant game!

Picture perfect summer blooms!📸 Featured here are cultivars of echinacea and monarda, two of our favorite flowers. These showstoppers add color to this home while supporting native insects and birds🐝🦋🐦‍⬛

Spot the difference! One of these pretty flowers is a highly desirable native and the other is an aggressive invasive species.

The first two photos show swamp milkw**d and the last two show purple loosestrife. Swamp milkw**d is a native that supports many native pollinators and because it is in the milkw**d family it is an essential host for monarch butterflies.

Don’t be fooled by the pretty flowers of purple loosestrife! This invasive aquatic species is highly aggressive and if left unchecked, will quickly take over and smother other plants. This flower may look pretty to us but it offers no value to native wildlife. On top of that, it forms extremely dense stands with matted roots that slow and can even stop the flow of water through a stream or wetland.

Wow! 🤩 The newly added fish passage at Kletzsch Park continues to stun! We are so proud of our hard work here, and this summer is not disappointing us.

This area is chock full of butterfly w**d, blue vervain, yarrow, common milkw**d, purple coneflowers, pale purple coneflowers, white boneset, rattlesnake master, sweet joe-pye w**d, Canada wild rye, and several types of asters. Shrubs include button bush, American elderberry, common ninebark, white meadowsweet, and American bladdernut. Our crew got to see monarch butterflies feeding on the two milkw**d species present here!

While this diverse array of plants supports insect and bird populations, the varied root systems also ensure the stability of the banks and prevent flooding by allowing precipitation to be absorbed.

🌈June may be over but pride never ends! One thing we’ve learned from working with nature is that diversity is our biggest strength. With people just as with nature, the differences between individuals only makes each unique piece all the more valuable.

We want to end June by highlighting an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ community who fought for q***r rights.

Lou Sullivan was an author and activist who was born in Wauwatosa in 1951. He was the first trans man to openly identify as gay. He blazed a trail in advocacy and founded FTM International, which was among the earliest grassroots organizations to provide support and resources to the LBGTQ+ community.

As we continue through the rest of the year, we want to remember his message of care and consideration for all. The natural world and the parts it is comprised of are highly varied and diverse. And like a garden or prairie or woods, each piece comes together to create something beautiful.🏳️‍🌈
