These concrete finishing machines make the first pass on the bridge deck. They consolidate the material inside the formwork, and also deliver a smooth finish. With that said, we rely on Merlo's expert craftspeople to perfect the final finish.

Slow and steady wins the race when you're setting bridge beams. These massive girders have to be guided into place in specific locations, so keeping them steady is key. More importantly, we have workers on the ground or tied off on a nearby girder or abutment while the load is in the air. Keeping them safe during a pick is always our highest priority.

The use of precast deck modules definitely helps us to achieve some incredible results, including the replacement of two bridge superstructures in 58 days on PA 160 in Sidman, Pa.

These sections are massive, measuring up to 66 feet long and 10 feet wide, and weighing up to 135,600 pounds.

It was early July when our crews got the temporary shoring installed and began forming the south abutment footer at Boynton Bridge. By July 23rd, the abutment stem was poured, waterproof membrane was installed, and backfilling was under way. As of July 30th, crews were removing the temporary sheet piling/stream diversion on the south side to begin installing sheet piling for the north side abutment. You can get a lot done in a month when you have a strong project team to develop the project plan and a productive field crew to execute.

Johnstown is no stranger to flooding. It was 1889 when the South Fork Dam failed, causing the historic Johnstown Flood.

Thanks to the efforts of Merlo employees, history won't be repeated, at least at the North Fork Dam. The intent of this project is to fortify the 100-year-old dam's spillway to meet PA DEP standards for extreme weather events. We've placed 8,000 cubic yards of concrete to date, and 14 lifts of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) with conventional nosing concrete totaling 2,000 cubic yards.

This is definitely a meaningful job for Merlo since we get to play an active role in protecting our neighbors in the Johnstown area.

Merlo had The Little Excavator That Could working at the Sidman Bridge demo. This excavator had no problem sliding these 63-foot-long, 36,477-pound deck beams off the bridge so our crew could break them down and send them off for recycling.

We are building two precast bridge superstructures in 58 days there on PA 160 in Sidman, Pa. Yes, you read that right. Two bridges in 58 days!

Merlo shut down Otto Run Bridge on June 9th and jumped right into demolition. We had the bridge abutments and deck modules set and reopened by June 16th. We're shooting to have the South Fork Little Conemaugh River bridge open to traffic by the time school is back in session.

When you have the right people in place, productivity and safety can coexist. Merlo crews are second to none.
