Why Prep Matters
Water expands when it freezes. That expansion can crack or burst your pipes, leading to expensive water damage and emergencies. Taking a few simple steps now can save you major headaches later.
🛠️ Steps to Prepare Now
🏠 Inside Your Home
✅ Set thermostat to at least 55–60°F (higher if you’re home) to keep pipes warm.
✅ Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air circulates around pipes.
✅ Let faucets drip slightly during the coldest hours to keep water moving and reduce freezing risk.
🚪 Outside & Unheated Areas
✅ Wrap exposed pipes with insulation, foam sleeves, towels, or even pool noodles.
✅ Disconnect & drain outdoor hoses so water doesn’t freeze in the line.
✅ Cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers or DIY insulation.
💧 Know Your Shutoff
📍 Locate your main water shut-off valve so you can turn off water quickly if a pipe bursts.
🚨 If Pipes Freeze or Burst
Signs include - no water flow, low pressure, or ice buildup in pipes. If that happens:
Turn off water immediately at the main valve to reduce damage.
