We have had more power outages in the past couple of days than since the hurricane in 2003. Central Virginia (including yours truly) was in the dark for enough time to appreciate electricity. (Personally my generator decided to give up the ghost at the worst of times! A new one is on order.)
There is an option for many folks who want to have the convenience of a generator but do not want to fork out $10,000 or more for a permanent unit. A generator interlock installed in an electric panel allows you to connect a portable generator to your electrical system and use many of your lights, refrigerator, microwave, and in many cases your internet until the utility comes back online. It is the safest and easiest way to use a generator at home.
The cost varies from home to home. $500 is a good guess for many residences. There is the price of a generator and cable to consider, and a decent one will run around $800.
If you are interested drop me a line and I can fill you in on more details. A site visit is usually required to assess the needs of the home.
Can you install this yourself? No. Not knowing what you are doing while messing around in an electric panel can get you killed. Installing an interlock improperly will keep it from working at best; potentially it can damage things connected to your wiring. It could also endanger the lives of utility people working on the lines . Leave this job to me.
I wish everyone a safe storm season!
