Chimney restoration is an important process that helps maintain the safety, strength, and lifespan of a masonry chimney. Over time, rain, moisture, freeze–thaw cycles, and heat from fires can cause bricks and mortar joints to crack, deteriorate, or wash out. When mortar begins to fail, water can enter the chimney structure, leading to loose bricks, structural damage, and further deterioration if not repaired properly. A professional restoration begins with a thorough inspection to identify damaged mortar joints, bricks, the chimney crown, and flashing.

One thing many homeowners forget is their chimney. Because it sits high on the roof and out of sight, it’s very common for people to go years without checking it or thinking about its condition. Unfortunately, small problems that go unnoticed can slowly turn into major repairs over time.

One of the most critical parts of chimney restoration is choosing the correct mortar for the repair. Chimneys have been built differently throughout history, and many older chimneys were constructed with softer mortar that allows the structure to expand and contract with temperature changes. Using a mortar that is too hard on an older chimney can actually damage the bricks over time because the bricks cannot handle the stress. For this reason, professionals must carefully match the new mortar to the original materials and construction style of the chimney.

During the restoration process, deteriorated mortar is removed and replaced through repointing, damaged bricks may be replaced, and cracks in the chimney crown or flashing are repaired to prevent water intrusion. When done correctly, chimney restoration strengthens the structure, protects it from moisture damage, and helps ensure the chimney continues to function safely and efficiently for many years.

It’s important to choose a mason that has the knowledge and experience to determine the best course of action to repair, treat and restore your chimney.
