Scandi-Modern Home Renovation Preview | Minneapolis Interior Design

New week, new project preview!

We’re so excited to see Leah’s final project with us begin to take shape. The Scandi-modern direction feels right at home alongside the house’s original details, fresh and considered, without losing the character that makes the home special.

The expanded footprint will be a total game changer. More room, better flow, and a space designed around how our lucky homeowners actually live.

In our Portland Project, every shelf and rollout was intentionally designed — accounting for size, frequency of use, and easy access. The result? A kitchen that looks beautiful and functions seamlessly.⁣

A few tips to start 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 planning✨⁣

✅Daily-use items like a toaster, blender, espresso machine, should live at counter height inside an appliance garage or a lift-up door cabinet.⁣
✅Weekly-use items like a food processor, waffle iron, slow cooker, belong on rollout trays at waist height.⁣
✅Occasionally used items can be higher or lower, but still assigned a purposeful home.⁣
✅Store heavy items between 27" and 40" above the floor for safe use.⁣

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?

We love a good home bar and not just for the cocktails.

One of the things we love most about incorporating a bar into a home is just how versatile it can be. Breakfast bar in the morning, coffee station on the weekend, beverage center for the kids, buffet service during the holidays, cocktail bar when friends arrive, or even a hardworking drop zone for everyday life.

The best part? It can be designed entirely around the way you live and entertain. Hidden or on display. Moody and dramatic or light and bright. There’s no one right way to do it.

Some projects just stay with you. Hillcrest is one of them. ❤️

By moving the kitchen into what had been an underutilized addition, we completely changed the way this home functions. The new layout gave us room for a generous kitchen, plus a dedicated walk-in pantry, bar, and a hardworking back entry with a bench for shoes and coats.

It’s one of our favorite examples of why good space planning matters. Sometimes the square footage is already there, it just isn’t being used to its full potential.

Maximum function. Maximum impact. And a transformation I still can’t quite believe.

A big shoutout to our stellar remodeling partners at Rascher & Co. and, of course, our lovely clients who trusted us to rethink what their home could be. 😍

The “Don’t Sit in There” Living Room? So Passé.

Gone are the days of the untouchable living room, the one where trespassers were easily identified by footprints in the freshly vacuumed carpet. IYKYK 😉

More and more, our clients are saying goodbye to the museum-style living room that rarely gets used and choosing spaces designed for actual living. Casual gatherings, morning coffee, a good book, cocktails with friends. Comfortable enough for every day, but sophisticated enough when the occasion calls for something more.

Living fully in your home means making every room earn its keep. That starts with understanding how you live. Your routines. Your taste. The things you love. How you entertain. How you want your home to feel.

Meet Kate Roos Design | Minneapolis Interior Designers

It's Monday and long past time to reintroduce ourselves to new followers and friends.

We’re Kate Roos Design. Beth, Kate, and Laura, (left to right) to be precise. We are a boutique interior design firm based in Minneapolis, specializing in renovations and new construction.

We believe the best homes are deeply personal. Our job is to listen, ask a lot of questions, solve the tricky problems, obsess over the details, and create spaces that feel distinctly like you.

We’re especially passionate about the complicated stuff: rethinking awkward floor plans, breathing new life into historic homes, designing kitchens that work incredibly hard, and helping our clients navigate the thousands (yes, thousands) of decisions that come with building or renovating a home.

We take the work seriously. Ourselves? A little less so.

The only thing missing is you. ❤️

I just returned from a week away with family, and I'm already missing those slow, relaxed mornings over coffee with my mother and sister.

There’s something about gathering around a table, coffee in hand, nowhere to rush off to, conversation lingering a little longer than usual, that reminds you how much the simplest moments matter. It’s so good to be together. And so hard when the people you love live far away.

This sweet little breakfast nook feels made for mornings just like those.

Custom Kitchen Storage Ideas for an Organized Pantry & Baking Station

As someone who regularly shops in bulk and stores just about everything in mason jars of every size, this kitchen has me swooning every single time.

The satisfaction of being able to see your ingredients at a glance, beautifully organized, easy to access, and ready when you need them. Yes, please!

And how about the dedicated baking counter below? Dreamy AND practical.

A glimpse of the Lowry Hill Kitchen, then and now.

It's hard to believe just how far this kitchen has come from its original state.

Light, bright, and thoughtfully reimagined, the new kitchen feels perfectly in sync with the rest of this beautiful turn-of-the-century home. Every decision was made to improve the way the space functions while respecting the character and architectural history that make the home so special.

For us, that's always the goal when renovating an older home: create something that works beautifully for the way we live today, without losing sight of what made the house beautiful in the first place.

The result feels fresh and new, yet like it could have been here all along. I am obsessed!

Inside the Pillsbury Castle Scullery | Luxury Kitchen Design

The scullery may be tucked away, but it works harder than almost any other room in the house.

Designed for the Pillsbury Castle renovation, this space keeps the everyday mess out of sight while adding an incredible amount of function. It's where dishes disappear, small appliances live, prep work happens, and entertaining becomes just a little more effortless.

Beautiful kitchens deserve a beautiful supporting cast, and a thoughtfully designed scullery might just be the unsung hero of the home.
