Why prune trees? Tree may be pruned for many different reasons. Young trees (any tree short of maturity) benefit from developmental pruning. Small cuts can eliminate problems (crossing branches, weakly attached limbs, codominant leaders, future clearance issues, etc.) while they are small, leading to healthier, longer-lived tree with a more aesthetically pleasing shape. Young trees will benefit from regular pruning, every 2-3 years for vigorously growing trees. As trees age, their growth will slow, and the pruning interval can extend, typically 3-10 years. As trees mature, large branches may die, and so removal of deadwood may be desirable. Structurally defective, storm damaged or diseased limbs would also be removed during regular pruning. Why remove trees? Trees may be removed for many different (some better than others) reasons. Volunteer trees, or trees that would planted unsuitable locations, may need to be removed if they are located too close to a structure. Trees with structural deficiencies may need to be removed, depending on the deficiencies severity and location in the tree (let your ISA certified arborist make a recommendation here). Some species are undesirable, and removing a young tree of an undesirable species when it is young can save considerably on cost, and allow you to plant a more desirable tree in its place sooner.
