We can complain all we want about Nationals but unless something is done to shed light on the decline in service as their problem and not us failing nothing will change.

Sent to Fox 9:

I wanted to reach out and share a tidbit of information the public may not know on why their trip to the store often leads to frustration trying to push a cart back to the car in a snow covered parking lot. Drive through any Target, Best Buy, Kinder Care or a host of other commercial properties and you may see a decline in snow removal service over the past few years.

Many may think it is the same issue as any business these days in lack of labor, however, they would be wrong. For the most part service decline is due to consumers contracting with National Property Management Vendors.

There is a growing movement in MN by snow removal providers to not work with National Vendors for a host of reasons.

These companies by in large are not located in MN and do not understand what needs to happen to make snow removal happen safe and efficiently or even how things needs to be billed to the consumer.

The consumer signs up with unrealistic promises from the national vendor who often does not have a contractor lined up. Vendors then send out requests to contractors with pricing already set. Often these prices are a fraction of the contract the vendor has with the consumer. Fine, free market at work right? That is until the National Vendors withhold payment because of “breach of contact” or “failure to provide adequate service” when indeed contracts have been followed as written.

A National Vendor may have a box store listed as a 1” trigger and then call asking why a site was not done after only 1/2”. Remember, contracts for the most part are a set monthly price and contractors do not get paid extra should they go above contract specs. These are the situations where payment may be withheld while things are “under review”. Often resulting in a contractor accepting partial payment just to recover some of budgeted income.

Communication is poor and expectations between the consumer and end providing contractor are often not what is originally agreed upon. This coupled with rising personal injury lawsuits which the national companies pin solely on the contractor has more and more contractors saying no thank you to national vendors.

It has gotten to the point of 1200 strong contractors seeing this as a running joke and talked amongst ourselves when we drive past your favorite store and see the lot not cleared of ice or snow.

This is an issue that is not going away and will continue to only get worse. You are paying more for your goods because your local stores are paying a national management company (who is failing more and more) from out of state to manage a fluid process like snow removal. One more reason to shop local. Next time you are frustrated with a state of a parking lot, ask management if they are supporting a local company or a national vendor. It is not us contractors who are failing you even though we may get the blame.
