FALL TIPS FOR TREE HEALTH

Every fall there are things you can do to help your trees not only survive the winter, but thrive. Our summer has been exceptionally hot and dry. The very best action you can take is to WATER your trees and shrubs. We really can't stress enough just how beneficial this is to help your trees make it through the winter.

-Water all trees (especially evergreens - they lose moisture throughout the winter) with a good thorough soaking (about one inch per week), from now until early November.

-Mulching protects plant roots and helps trees retain moisture. This is extremely important, especially when there is little or no snow cover. As the mulch decomposes in the spring, it continues to benefit the tree by adding nutrients to the soil.

-Installing tree barriers will keep mice, voles, rabbits and other wildlife from chewing on the trunk and stems. There are a wide variety of easily-installed barriers available at local home improvement stores. However, remember to remove the barriers in the early spring.
