Meet the Gardenshians at Sims Tree Learning Center
A Walk Through the Gardens

It’s hard to slow down and smell the roses in our go-go-go world. Constant pings, dings, and rings bury us in our screens, distracting us from what’s real and tangible.

How much greenery do you see on any given day? You might be lucky enough to unplug on your Annual Camping trip once a year. Or, you might be a plant parent. That’s cool; we’re not judging.

It’s not uncommon for a Sims staff member to hear that we’re lucky to be around so much green. It’s good for the eyes, you know!

Winter Tree Care in Southern California

But California Doesn’t Have Winters?

Not totally true!

California is incredibly biodiverse, and so is our terrain. Winters in Big Bear differ from winters in Palm Springs or along the coast. Rainy and windy weather affects our trees, gardens, and landscapes in ways that don’t in other states.

So, how should you prepare for this winter’s rainy and windy weather?

Meet the Syagrus romanzoffiana but don’t worry, you can just call her the Queen Palm. 👑🌴 She’s basically the Beyoncé of street trees in Southern California: gorgeous, low-maintenance, and able to handle both shade and sunshine like a true diva.

Just don’t try to plant her in the low desert or up in the icy mountains because even queens have boundaries.

When temps stay above 25°F in winter and hit 70°F and higher in summer, she thrives, grows past 25 feet, and stays fire-resistant, because of course she does.

She also puts on a show: cream-colored flowers hanging like nature’s chandeliers, plus clusters of green dates that ripen into bright orange fruit before dropping. And yes, she’s monoecious, meaning she comes with both male and female flowers. Truly an independent woman.

This stunning palm is a go-to for streets, medians, and landscape cutouts, adding instant tropical glamour wherever she’s planted.

🌿 We’re Back! TLC Wildlife Aware Certification Course Returns 🌿

After a long pause due to family health matters, we’re thrilled to announce that the TLC Wildlife Aware Certification Course is officially back!

If you work with trees — as an Arborist, Landscape Contractor, or tree care professional — this course is for you.

🦉 What You’ll Learn:
✅ How to recognize wildlife habitats before and during tree work
✅ Best practices to protect nesting, roosting, and denning wildlife
✅ Federal and state laws that protect wildlife — and how to stay compliant
✅ Real-world examples of tree work done the right way

There’s one thing tougher than a Ficus’ root system — explaining to Fish and Wildlife why your crew disturbed a nesting site. 😬

This course helps you recognize protected habitats, understand the laws, and make sure your work stands up to scrutiny. Knowledge now beats citations later.

📅 Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2025

📍 Location: Sims Tree Learning Center, Jurupa Valley, CA

🔗 Details & Registration: https://lnkd.in/gG_6nhx9

This course goes beyond compliance — it’s about protecting the wildlife that share our trees and raising the standard for our entire industry. 🌳💚

Discounts offered for groups of 5+ registrants.
