⚠️ SOUTH TEXAS PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE — SCREWWORM ALERT ⚠️
Residents of South Texas, including ranchers, pet owners, and outdoor families, are advised to remain vigilant. Officials are increasing surveillance efforts near the Texas border due to concerns regarding the New World Screwworm, a dangerous flesh-eating fly larvae capable of infesting open wounds in animals and, in rare instances, humans.
Please inspect pets, livestock, and outdoor animals regularly for the following signs:• Open wounds that do not heal• Foul odors or unusual drainage• Presence of maggots or larvae in sores• Excessive licking, irritation, or discomfort
Maintain clean and properly covered wounds, utilize appropriate fly prevention products, and contact a veterinarian immediately if any suspicious symptoms are observed.
This advisory is particularly important for ranchers, hunters, and individuals who work outdoors throughout South Texas. Early detection and prompt action are essential to protecting livestock, wildlife, pets, and local communities.
Please remain informed, prepared, and share this information with family members and neighbors across the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas.
