Turns out, the original built-in still had a few good ideas.

The cabinetry at the end of the main-floor hallway stayed right where it was, but it also gave us a starting point for the new built-ins Linley’s Cabinets created throughout this 1930s University Area home.

In the primary bedroom, that became a full wall of storage connected to the original without trying to copy it. The hallway piece kept its round pulls, while brass pulls from Emtek gave the new cabinetry a look of its own.

Elsewhere, the home’s original glass-and-brass door hardware was cleaned up and put right back to work.

The original stayed, the new work took a cue, and the home got a whole lot more storage.

Some entrances get better the closer you look.

From a distance, it’s the warm wood, black metal, and clean lines that pull everything together. Get a little closer and the details start doing their thing.

The front door is black walnut from RealCraft’s Carmel Series, finished in Luxe Oil Hazelnut Truffle and paired with Emtek’s Hercules lever. Around it, Montana Timber Products’ Ranchwood Artisan siding brings plenty of texture without competing for attention.

Add in the exposed timber, rain chains settling into that rusty patina, and landscaping chosen with the South Hills deer in mind, and there’s a lot happening before you even step inside.

Grab a seat. We’ll zoom out from here.

This home sits high in Stone Mountain on Mount Dean Stone, with a wall of Sierra Pacific windows taking in some of the best views in the Missoula Valley.

From the University of Montana to Ch-paa-qn Peak, there’s a whole lot of Missoula to look at from up here.

Morning coffee, sunset cocktail, or a few quiet minutes somewhere in between. This is a pretty good spot to drink it all in.

This Zen garden took some work.

We beefed up the floor trusses to support nearly 1,000 pounds of sand, and our friends at Dovetail used 12 whole gallons of glue to build the walnut slat wall. Neither number feels especially Zen, but we can explain.

The client wanted black walnut to tie into the other built-ins throughout the home. Milling every slat from solid walnut would have been wildly expensive and a hell of a task to keep straight, so Dovetail took a smarter route: poplar cores wrapped in black walnut veneer they sawed in-house.

This isn’t the paper-thin veneer most people picture, either. It’s cut up to 3/16” thick, giving them plenty to work with for a proper finish while using walnut where it matters most.

Every slat settles into a notched top rail with enough room for the wood to move naturally. A small gap above also hides the LED lighting that gives the wall its glow.

At the heart of the whole space is the client’s heirloom stone temple. The garden gives an important family piece a beautiful place of its own within the home.

One last cheers to James Bar.

Recently, we had the bittersweet job of taking down the James Bar sign, one letter at a time.

We’ve been lucky to work with the James Bar since the early days, helping with more than a few changes to this space over the years. We’ll miss working with them here, but we’re grateful for every project, every call and the friendship that came with all of it.

Thankfully, our friends next door at Al & Vic’s Bar aren’t going anywhere. We’re stoked to still be the ones they call whenever they need a quick bit of help.

As one chapter closes, we’re tipping our hats to Atomic Tacos Missoula as they get ready to take over the space. Welcome to Missoula. We’re excited to see what you do with the place.

Not everything has to follow the lines.

The Plume by Hubbardton Forge brings a strong, organic presence to a home already defined by bold angles, black metal, and warm wood.

Its folded, feather-like forms add movement through the stairwell without fighting the architecture around it. It’s functional lighting, but it also gets to be a statement piece.

Our architect selected this one, and it’s exactly the kind of choice we’d love to see more clients lean into.

Smaller project. Same attention to detail.

Not every job we take on is a full custom home or major remodel. Sometimes it’s a deck like this one, where the quality comes down to details most people might never notice.

Here, our lead carpenter Ben is selecting, spacing, and profiling each shingle by hand to keep the courses consistent while preserving the handmade character our client wanted.

That means plenty of time with a hand plane—shaping each piece for the right look, fit, and performance before it goes on the wall.

Small scope. Plenty of craft.

Chill out. They’re taken. And they’re busy sheeting.

We know, we know. The shades. The rolled up sleeves. The summer sun…but try to focus on the framing.

With the floor trusses going in, it was time to send our telehandler up the hill with another round of material for the second floor.

Trusses first, then fall protection and temporary railing, followed by a whole lot of sheeting. We still have a few cantilevered trusses to finish out this floor, but we’re right on schedule and making quick work of a jobsite that requires moving nearly everything uphill to the home.

And if you read this far…go outside, it’s too nice out.

No doom scrolling allowed.

It’s wild looking back at where this project started. Our clients are happily moved in and enjoying their home now, but there was a whole lot of work between framing and finished spaces like this one.

Rather than leave this as another hallway transition, the nook became a spot of its own with a white oak bench, floating shelves, and just enough separation to disappear into a good book for a while.
