The last of the greenhouse babies - loofa and queen lime blush zinnias. I already planted zinnias but last minute rediscovered a packet of seeds from last year and just haaad to have them. It feels good to have almost everything in the ground - finally!

It’s almost here, Missoula! Peak lilac season and the last frost date, May 18th, is right around the corner! It feels a wee bit earlier this year than I remember but blooming lilacs are a good reminder to plant those bean, cucumber, and squash seeds in the ground. The soil is finally warm enough 🌞🙌💕 If you started your cukes and squash indoors, you’ll want to wait until after the average last frost which is May 18th before planting transplants outside. And always keep an eye on the weather forecast! 👀 Those warm weather babies can’t handle a frost, so make sure to tuck them in with a blanket if temps dip into the mid 30s. Who has plans to garden this weekend? 🤚

My father’s a fisherman but I have yet to pick up the sport with enthusiasm. I have picked up the tendency to exaggerate size and lengths and to hold things out in front of me like prizes. I’m feeling pretty proud of this pear tree I planted last year and how well it’s doing, so I’d say these blossoms are at least 30-36 inches...or maybe I’ll just say “it’s a donkey” like my husband does. I married a fisherman too ☺️

It’s the beginning of the most magical time here.... the skies are brilliant blue and cheery. The colors, the clouds, the shadows...everything pops like vaVOOM ! all over the hillsides. I’m staring off into the high country at every traffic light...I forgot that it can be so beautiful, but ten years now, I remember this feeling every spring. the trees are just leafing out and so are the lilacs...which means it’s time to plant your brassicas, carrots, lettuce, spinach and onions. We’ve turned a corner and winter is far behind us.

As a white woman, I’m often lost for words to describe my sadness or, with moments like today, feelings of happiness for a step in the right direction...however I also know that I can use this platform to uplift others and spread the good words of those that say it best...Repost from 🙏

deep thanks to all the witnesses and protestors who helped to get us to today’s verdict. all our love and prayers to the Floyd family. we are feeling so much right now for the life and lives that have been lost and for all our interconnected lives and humanity. today we breathe a sigh of some relief, tomorrow we continue the work toward creating the more just world we believe is possible. George Floyd, may you rest in peace and power ❤️❤️❤️

I am the type of person that has everything written down on both a paper and phone calendar. When it comes to garden planning, I have a 3 ring binder with print outs that I refer to annually. However this year, my goal is to rely a little bit less on my notes and a lot more on seasonal natural phenomena...
Last year, I found a small article that tracked phenological changes across the northern US and how by watching common landscape plants, we can time the planting of our vegetables. 🙌 so magical! ✨🌱 It’s a good reminder that the whole landscape should be taken into account when gardening. An edible landscape doesn’t just mean vegetables, herbs and fruits but should also encompass habitat for insects and birds and indicator plants like the forsythia in this case...I do wonder what native plants would line up with our vegetables...🤔another science project for another day cause I’m off to plant some peas! ✨🌱✨

The first daffodil in my yard bloomed today! (So naturally...) I immediately cut it and put it in a vase to stare at inside all day. Anyone else have this tendency? Or...who instead leaves it for the neighbors, curb appeal, birds and bugs? (so considerate!)

TGIF! Something to noodle on this weekend:

If you want to grow your own vegetables but don't have a lot of space, container vegetable gardens are an option. Grow carrots, tomatoes, beans, and more in your own patio or balcony garden.
