MMW ARCHITECTS

MMW ARCHITECTS Architecture has the power to make a difference in the world. We create design solutions that contribute to this philosophy.

Founded in 1997, MMW Architects is committed to contributing positively to the built environment, while working in harmony with the natural environment. We create places that enrich life’s daily rituals and activities through beauty and efficiency. Our projects respond to the land and climate, as well as to the cultural and historic setting, revealing the inherent attributes of time and place. The

play of natural light in our buildings encourages the occupant to experience the passage of seasons. We take a holistic view of resource efficiency and sustainability in each project. Site planning, building design, systems design and material selection are interconnected facets of responsible resource efficient design. Good decisions save the owner money over the life of the building and contribute to a sustainable future. We believe that Architecture has the power to make a difference in the world and are committed to creating design solutions that contribute to that philosophy in all our work.

It's hard to believe its been 20 years since the completion of Orchard Gardens with Homeword - a project which exemplified our goals of providing affordable, sustainably-built housing with a true connection to place.

Andi Armstrong writes: "Given the real need for more affordable housing in Missoula, it’s tempting to think of elements like energy efficiency and green infrastructure as luxuries we can’t afford. In fact, the opposite is true. As climate impacts accelerate and budgets continue to be stretched, Orchard Gardens remains a shining example of how we can build the future we all want, with affordable, healthy and safe homes."

Earlier this month, Chris Haskell joined a panel at the Precast Concrete Institute Mountain States Meeting in Missoula to discuss the Sierra Pacific showroom and warehouse — from precast wall panel design and project delivery to how the building is performing today.

Grateful for the conversation and the collaborators who made the project possible.

‘The completed house, which was ready to move into toward the end of 2024, exceeded the clients’ expectations. “They told me, ‘We never thought we could find something that represented all of us. It’s even better than we expected,’” Lipski recalls. “But that’s what I aim to do in my work: to be a curator of their thoughts, needs, goals, and dreams.”’

"The new home will provide a place to live and therapeutic services for up to eight kids aged 10-17 who otherwise would have gone to the emergency room, youth detention, or emergency placements, which can sometimes be on the floor of a social worker's office, Schaer told the crowd. "

We are honored to be working with Amy and the entire team at Youth Homes to bring this much needed youth crisis shelter to the Missoula community. Now that the official public fundraising campaign has launched we are excited to share more about this project as construction wraps up this summer.

Youth Homes launched a fundraising campaign for a new therapeutic crisis shelter in Missoula, naming it after late community leader Geoff Birnbaum.

Candemonium is alive at the mall. Come see some stone-age sculptures and help the Missoula Food Bank & Community Center restock their shelves! We had a blast helping the food bank design and construct this Stegosaurus. Thanks also to Boyce Lumber and Design Center for donating the plywood!

Multiple generations of this family have taken refuge on these shores on Flathead Lake since the 1960’s. With 60′ of elevation drop from the entry road to the shore, careful site planning was required on the land in order to graciously receive the Floating House as well as a new, accessible drive down to it. Two old cabins were removed. Due to the site being a huge, sloping bedrock slab, little site area was actually available for the home. As a result, it’s oriented parallel to the shorelines in what little low slope area exists. This orientation provides the feel of being on a houseboat, moored at the docks, but living right on the water.

At the center, all social functions occur. This form is flanked by two glass boxes that provide circulation from one side of the home to the other and create a break between social and private spaces. Bookending the social area are the sleeping quarters for Grandma, her kids/spouses and her grandkids, as well as guests (Grandma and guests on one end; kids with the grandkids and, of course, a bunk room on the other). The roof lines of the Floating House mimic the multiple benches that step down the hillside. Natural materials blend the home into the landscape and hillside and allow it to patina with time. It’s subtle and quiet… except when it’s not. And that’s how it’s supposed to be when family gathers on the lake.

MMW was honored to participate in Hellgate High School ’s Women in Construction Day, connecting with students and sharing how architecture is one of many meaningful career paths within the building industry. Conversations like these help strengthen and grow the field of architecture by expanding awareness, access, and representation for the next generation of designers and builders. We were proud to stand alongside so many talented women, showing students that they belong in this industry.
