Each property is unique as the people who own it. The value of your timber depends on which species are on your property, the size of the trees, the amount of land acreage you own, market prices, etc. The actual value of your timber can’t be given without a forester first checking your property. Our forestry consultant will measure your trees and tally species to determine the worth of your timber.

Bark
Young, wild black cherry trees will have smooth, purple-brown bark. An adult wild cherry tree will have brown to black bark, which is cracked with thick lines running through it. The inner bark is a dark red color.

Leaves
The leaves of a black cherry are 2-5 inches long and lacking ridges. The lines running through the leaves should be mostly straight and not overly curly, in which case it could be a buckthorn tree. The leaves will be dark green, except in fall when they are orange or yellow, and the edges of the leaves will be mostly smooth.

Fruit
The fruit of cherry trees grow in a dense cluster and each cherry contains only one seed. They start out as a light orange color and darken into a black-red as they ripen. The fruit ripens in August and is pea-sized with a single pit inside. In spring, they are identifiable by the small, whitish-pink flowers that grow in bunches on the tree. The flowers produce an unpleasant smell, but are lovely to look at.

Often trees leave their seeds all over the forest floor, but their large canopies prevent any of the seeds from getting sunlight and growing. Once large trees are cut, it opens a small clearing which allows young saplings to grow.

In Indiana, low grade trees such as Beech and Sycamore often take over forests. By having these trees cut down for pallet logs, it allows high grade species such as white oak and walnut to grow.

What really sets us apart from other loggers is our genuine concern for the future of our forests. That is why we focus on green harvesting practices and proper forest management, which in turn keeps logging sites looking as good as possible. The cleanup crew is led by our foreman, Chris, who creates a harvesting plan that focuses on removing selected trees while leaving the rest untouched.

You might find that other logging companies cut with no concern and your property will look like a tornado ran through it. In light of this, Chris has designed a strategy for green harvesting that really works. It takes more time and is harder for our logging crew, but the results are worth it.

In forestry terms, we harvest to improve future growth of the residual stand by using single tree and group tree selection. What that means is—in 5 years, the logged area will be filled with saplings, and in 10, it will be filled with beautiful trees! This method of logging isn’t just beneficial for the environment, it also promotes the growth of high value trees. As a property owner, if you harvest with us once, your second harvest will be even more profitable and happen even sooner than if you log with other companies.

Trees that are currently in high demand and bring more profit to your timber sell are: poplar, walnut, white oak, red oak, hard maple, soft maple, hickory, cherry, and ash. We harvest other trees, but they are of lower value and generally become saw logs.

Lower value trees on your property can lower the amount of money you get from selling your timber. We always use harvesting practices that ensure new growth of high value trees in case you ever wish to get your timber harvested again for more profit.

Bark
Walnut bark has deep furrows and rounded ridges, running vertically up the tree like rivers. If you pull a piece of the grayish colored bark off, it will be a chocolate brown color underneath.

Leaves
Walnut trees grow compound leaves with 15-23 leaflets that can be up to 2-feet long. But, instead of being directly across from each other, the leaflets grow up the stem in an alternating pattern like steps. Leaves emerge in late spring and turn yellow to brown in early autumn.

Fruit
Walnuts from a walnut tree grow in a large green husk, only somewhat smaller than a tennis ball. The husks when ripened fall from the tree. Eventually, the husks littering the ground around the tree with tull black and shrivel away, leaving the small black nut most people recognize as the walnut.

We Agree!
TRUTH: Timber management practices based on science create a dynamic forest habitat that can be adapted to meet specific wildlife objectives.

Shelterwood harvests not only increase the likelihood that oaks will regenerate but also open up the canopy, thereby increasing understory browse and plant growth for wildlife.

Openings benefit Ruffed Grouse, American Woodcock, Chestnut-sided Warblers, Eastern Whip-poor-will, rabbits, rodents, Eastern box turtle, Wild Turkey, Indiana bat, Northern long-eared bat and deer.
