Beauty is not superfluous; it is necessary. Why have we stopped building beautifully? Why is everything white, black, gray, and made of plastic? What does this say about the state of our culture? Philosophize below!

Are you like a window guy? I get asked this all the time. The short answer is a qualified “yes.” I’m technically a trim carpenter, but I really like working on old windows, even if it’s just replacing a single pane. These windows got the DAP treatment a few years back, hence all the mildew and mold. The only problem with a replacement like this is now the surrounding panes look quite sad!

My method for making matching muntins. The alliteration potential abounds! This work is for the restoration of Summit Street Inn, which is in downtown Fairhope, AL. Built in 1925, it will soon be open for visitors once again. I restored 12 sash total for this project and it was a blast. Lots of Dutchman’s and lots of replicated muntins. This exercise is another example of the genius of old windows. They can be repaired by a competent carpenter, thereby giving them another 100 years of life. Shout out to for gifting me the Ryoba. It’s awesome. Also, credit to for the picture of the muntin profiles. It can be found on pg. 139 of “Millwork: The Design and Manufacturing of Historic Millwork from 1740-1950.” Fantastic book.

Did you know your old windows could look like this? Did you know that it’s possible make them as efficient as new windows? Don’t replace the most beautiful feature of your historic home. Restore! Don’t replace!

My first job in residential construction was sash restoration. I had no idea what I was doing. I was handed a tube of DAP 33 “glazing”, some push points, and was told to get to it. I quickly realized that something wasn’t right. So I taught myself the right way, and I’ll be honest; there are few things I enjoy more than bringing an old window back to life.

recently sent me their Ryoba, and this was my first chance to put it to use. Love it. Sharp and versatile. Feels nice and balanced in the hand. It made quick work of this repair. I particularly like how a Ryoba will glide flush across a mitered block, allowing me to make small cuts that would be impossible on a miter saw. 10/10
