Part of this bookcase project involves relocating a couple of electrical outlets. Since the bookcase will cover two existing outlets, I will be moving them to the front of the unit in the baseboard.

The tricky part is that code requires the original junction boxes to remain accessible, even if they’re no longer in use. To solve that, I designed the lower back section of the bookcase to be removable.

All of the backs were cut from the same sheet so the grain flows continuously, and the removable section is split into two pieces with a small ribbon pull for easy access. They’re held in place with rare earth magnets, with stainless steel strips added to the back to give the magnets something solid to grab onto.

It’s one of those details that will probably never be seen or used but it’s still worth doing right.

Made some solid progress on this custom bookshelf project this week.

This set is being built to match a unit I completed for this client last year. It’s all maple and will be finished with a rich brown stain.

The main construction is just about wrapped up, next step is all the trim. I’ll be custom making the baseboards, shoe molding, and crown to tie everything together.

We’re also running electrical to the front of the shelves (hidden in the base), which will make them a lot more functional without sacrificing the clean look.

More updates coming soon.

Another project crossed off my list!

These matching nightstands were built to match the clients existing cabinetry and paint in their home. Beyond just painting these were finished with a clear coat to help increase the durability. Each drawer has soft close slides and are made from high quality pre-finished birch plywood. These should hold up to daily use for years to come.

Just wrapped up this White Oak coffee table.

Simple design on the surface, but a lot of thought went into every detail.

The legs are made from rift-sawn oak so the grain stays consistent no matter which angle you’re looking from. The bottom shelf is mounted with custom brackets to create a clean “floating” look between the legs.

Finished with a custom Sherwin-Williams stain and protected with multiple coats of a water-based topcoat for durability and a smooth feel.

Just finished transforming a full-size antique bed into a queen! 🛏️

I swapped out the metal rails for solid maple, added new slats with a center support, and carefully matched the finish with layers of stain, toner, and shellac. The result? A sturdy, beautiful bed ready for many more years of use.

Antique beds rarely come in queen, so it’s always fun to bring them into the modern size while keeping their original charm!

Just wrapped up the painting phase on the final set of windows I’ve been restoring.

I use an oil-based enamel for these. It’s definitely more demanding to work with than standard paint, but the payoff is worth it. It leaves a much tougher finish that also helps level out the imperfections in old, worn frames.

The only tradeoff is patience… it takes about a week to cure enough before I can properly clean the glass and reinstall everything.

Feels good to see this project nearing the finish line.

Took advantage of the nice weather today and made some great progress.

On my window restoration project, the exterior is now primed, and the interior is stained and finished. Each individual section has to be carefully taped off to keep new glazing out of the stained areas, about 30 minutes per window, but worth it for a clean, professional result.

I also made replacement trim pieces that inevitably break during window removal. No matter how careful you are, there are always a few casualties. Those are now stained and finished as well.

Finished the day by getting another coat on the dining table I’m refinishing. Step by step, it’s coming together.

It’s been a slow week thanks to the snow and low temperatures. Several days were spent clearing driveways. The rest of the week was spent trying to get my work area warm enough to apply the finish on this table I have been working on refinishing. Hopefully, next week it will be a little warmer and I can start to get caught up.

I don’t take on a lot of refinishing jobs, but every now and then it’s a nice change of pace. Based on the joinery and overall style, this piece appears to date back to the early 1900s. It was extremely well built, it just needed some help getting back to a like-new condition.

Everything was sanded down to bare wood. The drawer bottoms were replaced after breaking and warping over time. The doors were also replaced due to the poor condition of the original veneer, along with several pieces of trim that had warped.

Matching the new parts to the original wood took some effort: two different stains, three coats of dye, and a coat of shellac before the final finish.

I also built a new back for the piece, including a mirror that had gone missing sometime over the last 100+ years. The side pieces on the back were cut with the same profile as the legs so everything looks cohesive and original to the piece.
