Dragon Bravo Fire Line of Duty Death 09-08-2025

Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3 under Incident Commander Matt Rau, Grand Canyon National Park, Kaibab National Forest, and USDA Forest Service Southwest Region are profoundly saddened to announce a line of duty death that occurred Monday afternoon, September 8, 2025, on the Dragon Bravo Fire in northern Arizona.

The firefighter was actively involved in suppression repair when he suffered a cardiac emergency near the North Rim Entrance Station. Rapid medical assistance was rendered from a line paramedic; however, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends. The wildland fire community is inherently interagency, and a line of duty death impacts us all.

We deeply appreciate this firefighter’s dedication to his profession and to the communities threatened by wildland fire.

Support is being provided to fellow professional wildland firefighters and friends on the Dragon Bravo Fire. An investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The procession for Wildland Firefighter Ruben Romero
On September 1, 2025, the procession will begin in Whitehall, Montana at 12:00 p.m. and will conclude for the day at Riplinger Funeral Home in Spokane, Washington.

Firefighting crews, emergency vehicles, and first responders will be providing honor and respect for Firefighter Romero by lining the streets and Interstate 90 overpasses and rendering a salute as the procession passes through, in route to Spokane.

Those who are interested in paying their respects to Firefighter Romero are welcome to participate as stationary spectators. Please honor Romero safely from sidewalks and side streets and allow the procession to travel smoothly along the route.

Firefighter Romero will rest overnight at Riplinger Funeral Home with an honor watch provided by his fellow crew members. On September 2, Romero will depart Riplinger Funeral Home with a more intimate procession provided by his fellow crew members. Romero will conclude his journey in Mexico where he will be received by his family.

The wildland firefighting community deeply appreciates Firefighter Romero's 20 years of dedication to our profession.

On behalf of this post TJ Forestry publicly confirms the passing of Ruben Gonzales Romero due to a medical emergency. Ruben was actively on the line of duty at the Bivens Creek Fire when the tragedy occurred.

Ruben was a well know wild land firefighter that had been on the line of duty for 20+ years. He was a dedicated firefighter whom loved his job and enjoyed running his saw on the line. He brought joy, laughter, and wisdom to every crew he worked on. Ruben, you will be dearly missed. Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Our deepest coundolescense to all his friends and family.

En nombre de esta publicación, TJ Forestry confirma públicamente el fallecimiento del Señor Rubén Gonzales Romero debido a una emergencia médica. Rubén se encontraba en servicio activo en el incendio de Bivens Creek cuando ocurrió la tragedia.

El Señor Rubén era un bombero forestal reconocido con más de 20 años de servicio. Era un bombero dedicado que amaba su trabajo y disfrutaba usar su motosierra en la línea de fuego. Aportaba alegría, risas y sabiduría a cada equipo en el que trabajó. Rubén, te extrañaremos profundamente. Gracias por tu dedicación y arduo trabajo. Nuestro más sentido pésame a todos sus familiares y amigos.
