Let's briefly talk lawn Core Aeration.
No a dog did not p**p all over the lawn, but it will look that when we're done. Core aeration is the process of removing small plugs (cores) of soil from your lawn to relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots more easily. It’s one of the most effective ways to improve overall lawn health. This is a service we offer.
1. Reduces Soil Compaction
Over time, foot traffic, mowing equipment, and rain pack soil tightly. Compacted soil makes it difficult for grass roots to grow and access oxygen.
Core aeration:
- Loosens the soil structure
- Creates space for roots to expand
- Improves root depth and strength
2. Improves Air, Water, and Nutrient Flow
The holes created by aeration allow:
- Oxygen to reach the root zone
- Water to pe*****te deeper instead of running off
- Fertilizer and nutrients to reach the roots more efficiently
- This leads to healthier and more resilient grass.
3. Reduces Thatch Buildup
Thatch is a layer of dead grass and organic material between the soil and the green grass blades. When it gets too thick, it blocks water and nutrients.
Core aeration helps:
- Breaks down thatch naturally
- Introduce soil microbes that decompose organic matter
4. Encourages Stronger Root Growth
Because roots have more oxygen and space, they grow:
- Deeper
- Thicker
- More drought-resistant
This results in a lawn that tolerates heat, stress, and heavy use better.
5. Improves Overseeding Success
Aeration is one of the best times to overseed because the holes:
- Provide ideal seed-to-soil contact
- Protect seeds from wind and birds
- Holds moisture around seeds
We recommend to aerate and overseed at the same time for this reason.
6. Helps Lawn Recover From Stress
Aeration can help lawns bounce back from:
- Drought stress
- Heavy traffic
- Poor drainage
- Compacted clay soils (common in parts of the Midwest)
The best times to aerate are:
Early fall (September–October) "best"
Spring (April–May) second best
