This is how your indoor unit or "air handler" coil functions. When the refrigerant makes the coil cold it begins to create condensation. The condensation forms large drops of water that run down the coil fins and into the coils primary drain pan then out the condensate drain. When the coil fins build up enough dust in between them to create a bead, the large drops of water will run all the way down the fins until it hits the bead, then drip right there from the coil before making it to the drain pan. That will result in water damage. Call Henson Air Repair LLC @ 434-665-4701 to make sure that doesn't happen to you. Having a dirty coil inside your indoor unit (or "air handler" as it's called in our industry) can and almost always will cause water damage to some degree. The condensation was dripping from the larger dust particles stuck in the coil instead of running all the way down the coil to the primary condensate drain pan and then out the condensate drain line. That resulted in filling the return box with almost 3" of water as you can see in the picture. Had this return box not been sealed with caulk, all that water in the bottom would have leaked out of it and soaked into the walls, floors, and wall studs which if left unaddressed would have created mold! Not good! I was able to "PROPERLY" chemical clean the coil which not only fixed the dripping but it drastically improved their whole home air quality! Don't risk water damage or possible flooding on dirty coils! If you've never had them cleaned, it's time to have it done! *IMPORTANT* At Henson Air Repair LLC every repair we perform on your system, regardless of which part of the system we are working on, we always follow up with a full system inspection. I was at this job to install a better condensation drain. During the system inspection, I discovered that the breaker in this unit had been burning up and was very close to becoming a fire and electrical hazard. I brought this to their attention and they chose to replace it the next morning. Overnight, the breaker burned up even more. We just replaced a heat pump system for another new family member of Henson Air Repair LLC. Their old system had multiple leaks in the coils and the repair cost would have been too costly given its age. We had them back up and running in about five hours! It's important to understand that sometimes when one board goes bad, it can also damage the other board for the corresponding unit. When that happens, the first board needs to be replaced before you can know if the other board or boards have been damaged. It's unfortunate but that's the way it goes sometimes.
