When Fox26 Houston needed a disaster restoration expert, they called one of us.

Stanley Hallibaugh, Business Development Manager from our Houston branch, recently sat down with Fox26 to break down what area home and business owners need to know about flooding, wind damage, and water intrusion this hurricane season, plus how to bounce back if disaster strikes.

Knowledge is your first line of defense. We're proud to have Stanley out there sharing it!

During this stormy season, National Lightning Safety Awareness Week serves as a timely reminder to take lightning seriously and review essential safety tips for storms. It's easy to underestimate, but lightning is a real threat to your home — not just from a direct strike, but from the fires and electrical surges that can follow.

• If you hear thunder, stay off corded phones and away from anything plugged into an outlet — lightning can travel through wiring and plumbing.
• Skip the shower or sink until the storm passes.
• Keep some distance from windows and exterior doors.
• Consider whole-home surge protection for your electronics and appliances.
• A professionally installed lightning protection system can help direct a strike safely into the ground instead of through your home.

Storms happen fast, but a little preparation can save you a lot of stress (and money) later. And if you ever do need help recovering from storm damage, we're here 24/7/365.

Sunday marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. On a lighter note, it’s the start of peak season for backyard gatherings, grilling, and outdoor projects.

Here are four reminders to keep the extra daylight hours incident-free:
🔥 Grill smart. Keep grills at least 10 feet from siding, deck railings, and overhangs, and never grill under a covered porch.
🔌 Mind the cords. Outdoor extension cords should be rated for exterior use and should never be daisy-chained, especially with string lights or power tools.
❄️ Watch the AC load. Window units and portable ACs draw a lot of current. Avoid running them on the same circuit as other major appliances.
🕯️ Extinguish fires fully. Fire pits, citronella candles, and tiki torches should be completely out, not just smoldering, before you call it a night.

This June marks the 30th anniversary of National Safety Month, and one of its weekly themes, Moving Safety Forward, reflects something we live out every day at ServiceMaster DSI.
Our Director of Safety and Training, Butch Mattson, put it well:
"Employee safety and customer safety is a top priority for our company — and here's why."

• Every job site gets a hazard analysis. Fire, flood, and storm damage create unpredictable conditions. We map the risks before work begins.
• Our technicians are our greatest asset, and getting them home safely at the end of every shift is our fundamental responsibility.
• Your peace of mind matters. When you're already dealing with a crisis, our job is to bring order to the chaos, not add to it.
• Safety drives efficiency. Doing things right the first time keeps your project on schedule and protects everyone’s bottom line.

Safety isn't a slowdown. It's the standard.

Wind and rain damage are among the most common, yet preventable, property claims of the season. Here are four things homeowners should check before the next storm hits:
🔹 Inspect the roof and gutters. Missing shingles and clogged gutters are two of the fastest paths to water damage.
🔹 Check windows, doors, and exterior seals. Cracked caulk and worn weatherstripping let wind-driven rain in faster than most people expect.
🔹 Evaluate trees and landscaping. Overhanging branches and weakened trees are a potential hazard.
🔹 Know where water enters and exits the home. Confirm the sump pump is working and that grading slopes away from the foundation before heavy rain arrives.
