Reflection
"The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, “Why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?” (NLT)" Isaiah 44:19
God explains to His people how silly it is for them to put their hope into a man made idol. He admonishes them for not reflecting on what they are doing. Why would a wood figure made by hand be able to offer salvation? How many things do we put our trust in just because someone else tells us this is a sure thing? We have to use our ability to reason to help us find truth for our lives.
When we pause and truly reflect, the truth of God becomes clearer to us. His Word is a lamp that helps us see what is real and what is false. Ephesians 5:10–11 says “Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.” Reflection requires slowing down, evaluating our choices, and letting the Holy Spirit guide us. When we stop long enough to question the things we put our hope in, we can redirect our trust back to the One who never fails.
