A realtor friend says :::: I had the most amazing experience this morning with Joe Wahler, J. Wahler Contracting of Montvale. Ice damming was wreaking havoc at a client's home and we needed help immediately. I got in touch with Joe and in lightening speed he was on his way to the home and got down to business. He diligently identified the best course of action, communicated with the sellers directly who were not home, and within a couple of hours he had the situation wrapped up and under control. Mind you, with the wind chills below 0, Joe did not hesitate to come to the rescue and he did a wonderful job. He is reasonably and fairly priced, and no job is too small for him to tackle. I am so very grateful. Thank you Joe!!! 🏘🔑❤ Contact Joe at 201-391-2597.

ADVICE FROM A CONTRACTOR::: I had a customer contact me today saying water was coming from her ceiling and could I come over. After seeing this it was the ice building up in her gutters and the melting ice water had no way to escape … professional term is ice damming. I’m going to give you all some information on a few things you can try if this happens to you. The most important information I can give you is be very careful on ladders 🪜 in snow and get a helper to hold the ladder

1- You need to get up on a ladder directly in front of the area that’s leaking inside. Shovel off as much snow as possible from the gutter up the roof as you can reach and as wide or wider then leak area.

2- after you shovel it off use a small 🪓 and carefully chop the ice off the roof that meets the gutter and if you can chop inside the gutter without damaging things do so. Do not chop up your shingles use the back of the hatchet 🪓

3- get Home Depot buckets of extremely hot water and soak down the roof from high up and mostly in gutters … do this a couple times with scolding hot water

4- get rock salt and throw it all over the roof area that’s leaking and load the salt up all along the gutter line … put it on very heavy … this will stop it from freezing up constantly and will allow the water to escape and keep flowing as temps drop at night …

5 - If you can disconnect your down spout also so water 💦 runs out …

The entire solution requires you to release the back pressure that the ice does to the melting water. Give the water a place to go ..

THE SOLUTION:::: as soon as things totaly dry up have a roofer come and remove your gutter and strip 4’ of shingles off the roof from the eve up … they will install snow and ice shield on the plywood and they will wrap the facia with it … this step is the most important.
They will match your roof color and reinstall your shingles over the snow and ice shield .. The roofer will put the gutter back up once he’s done ..

Worst case scenario:: you are literally drowning inside and thousands of dollars of damage are happening. You get on the ladder with the axe 🪓 and you chop large sections and literally destroy your gutters or rip them off the house. ( gutters are not expensive to replace ) This will immediately stop the water and it will now run off the roof outside. You may not be able to remove the gutter because it will be frozen to the facia and it’s screwed in. So chopping one foot sections will work. Use lots of salt

I was doing a ton of this in the 80s when we would get snow like we are getting. The salt trick is amazing.

Be well don’t fall and get help !
