Some things deserve a second chance.

This old barn has been standing through countless seasons, storms, and generations. Over time, brush and volunteer trees slowly closed in until it nearly disappeared from view.

We didn’t build this barn.

We didn’t restore it.

We simply gave it the chance to be seen again.

One of the best parts of this job is uncovering the character that’s been hiding beneath years of neglect. Every property has a story, and it’s rewarding to help those stories come back into view.

Whether it’s an old barn, a forgotten fence line, or acreage that’s slowly been reclaimed by nature, we’re here to help you take it back.

Sometimes it’s not about removing trees… it’s about revealing what was always there.

This old barn had been hidden behind years of brush, vines, and overgrowth. Most people driving by would have never guessed it even existed.

One day’s work completely changed the look and feel of the property not by adding anything, but by uncovering what time had hidden.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this job. Every property has potential. Sometimes it just needs someone willing to dig in and bring it back.

If your property has slowly disappeared behind years of overgrowth, let’s change that.

Here are some facts for you to read today. The tree care industry is pretty specific as to what is proper and what is not proper. Here are two lists of why we should not top trees and why trimming trees during the summer months is not recommended!

Why You Should NOT Top a Tree:
1. Destroys Natural Structure
Topping removes the central leader and dominant branches, ruining the tree’s natural growth habit and shape.
2. Weak Regrowth
New shoots (called water sprouts) grow rapidly from the cuts, but they’re weakly attached and prone to breakage.
3. Increased Risk of Failure
Topped trees are more likely to fail during storms due to poorly attached limbs and weakened structure.
4. Starves the Tree
Removing too much canopy at once strips the tree of its food-producing leaves, putting it in survival mode.
5. Sunscald and Bark Damage
Sudden exposure to sunlight can cause bark to crack, blister, or die, especially on previously shaded limbs.
6. Invites Disease and Decay
Large, open wounds from topping cuts don’t heal well and leave the tree vulnerable to fungi, insects, and rot.
7. Shortened Lifespan
Topped trees often decline rapidly and die prematurely from the stress and resulting damage.
8. High Maintenance
Topping creates a cycle: you’ll need to constantly prune weak regrowth or deal with dangerous breakage.
9. Reduces Property Value
A disfigured tree can become an eyesore and lower curb appeal, especially if it’s a focal point of the landscape.
10. It’s Not a Safe Height Control Method
Topping doesn’t reduce long-term height; regrowth shoots often exceed the original height within a few years.
11. Against Industry Standards
ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) and TCIA (Tree Care Industry Association) both condemn topping as harmful.

Why You Should Avoid Trimming Trees in Summer:
1. Heat Stress
Summer trimming removes shade-producing limbs, exposing the tree to heat stress during the hottest time of year.
2. Reduced Energy Reserves
Trees store energy in their leaves; removing them in summer cuts into reserves they need for growth and defense.
3. Increased Pest Activity
Open wounds in summer attract insects, borers, and disease pathogens that are more active in warm months.
4. Risk of Sunscald
Like with topping, removing branches too aggressively can suddenly expose bark and cause sunburn.
5. Disrupts Fruiting and Flowering Cycles
For flowering or fruit trees, summer pruning can remove buds or new growth needed for the next season.
6. Weaker Wound Healing
Trees are less efficient at compartmentalizing and sealing off wounds in peak summer heat.
7. Attracts Disease
Certain diseases (like oak wilt or fire blight) spread more easily during the summer when vectors are active.
8. Unnecessary Growth Stimulation
Some species respond to summer cuts by putting out stress growth—new shoots that are weak and poorly timed for fall dormancy.
9. Wastes Energy for Defense
Trimming forces the tree to reallocate energy toward healing instead of root growth or defense against summer threats.
10. Aesthetic Concerns
Summer-pruned trees can look scorched or ragged due to uneven new growth or exposed inner canopy.
11. Wildlife Disruption
Many birds and animals are actively nesting or rearing young in summer; pruning could disturb or displace them

🌪️ THE TORNADO MAY ONLY LAST MINUTES.
THE DAMAGE CAN STAY DANGEROUS FOR DAYS.

Before the wind hits:

• Put your shoes on. Bare feet and storm debris are a terrible combination.
• Grab a helmet, pillows or heavy blankets to protect your head and neck.
• Take your phone, charger, keys and identification into shelter.
• Get the pets secured before they realize everyone is panicking.
• Stay away from windows—and don’t waste time trying to record the tornado.

After the wind stops:

• Stay away from downed power lines and anything touching them.
• Don’t stand beneath broken limbs to “see how bad it is.”
• Don’t start cutting storm-damaged trees unless you understand compression, tension and spring-loaded wood.
• Never operate a generator inside a garage, basement or near an open window.
• Remember that a tree still standing may be more dangerous than one already on the ground.

When Mother Nature starts throwing trees around, Dead Ash Services is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for TREEMERGENCIES.

At Dead Ash Services we are here to build lasting relationships in our community not just collect a paycheck and disappear.

We provide more than just tree work. We bring hard work, dedication, experience, and real solutions to problems before they become disasters.

Sometimes trees looks full of life with plenty of foliage but are still a disaster waiting to happen. This red maple looked like it was still holding on until the wind proved otherwise.

It was a co-dominant, multi-stemmed red maple that had been heavily damaged by carpenter ants. One-third of the tree failed during the wind, landing into a pine tree and across telecom lines. When I first came out, it was more of an emergency situation, so instead of worrying about pictures, I got straight to work getting the failed stem safely off the lines.

We were able to remove that section without damaging the telecom lines and with only minimal damage to the pine tree it had fallen into.

Since one stem had already failed from internal decay and ant damage, the remaining two stems needed to come down before they ended up on the telecom lines — or worse.

This is exactly why tree inspections matter.

If you notice:

* Holes in the trunk with dirt or sawdust-like material inside
* Cracks that appear to be spreading
* Multiple stems splitting from the same trunk
* Dead limbs, hollow spots, decay, or soft wood
* Trees leaning toward your house, driveway, fence, or utility lines

Don’t ignore it.

All it takes is one good gust of wind for a compromised tree or limb to come down and cause serious property damage — or seriously injure someone.

If you’re looking at your trees and aren’t sure what to look for, reach out. I’d be happy to come do a walk-through with you, inspect your trees, and help make sure your property is safe for you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors.
