🌴 CAROLINA CONTENT SPOTLIGHT
THE STANDARD BUILT INTO EVERY JOB | COMBAT CRAWLSPACE
Here at Carolina Content, one of the things we enjoy most is getting the opportunity to highlight local businesses and the people behind them. These are the businesses built in our communities, serving our neighbors, and often growing one customer and one recommendation at a time. And when we get the opportunity to talk with a veteran-owned business, there’s always a little something extra behind the story—because there’s usually a story of service that started long before the business did.
Recently, we had the chance to talk with Myles, owner of Combat Crawlspace, a veteran-owned company serving homeowners throughout Lake Norman and the surrounding areas. As we got into our conversation, one word kept finding its way back into the story: trust.
Because a home is personal. It’s where your family lives. Where your kids sleep and play. Where friends and loved ones gather. It’s where holidays are celebrated, memories are made, and everyday life happens. For most of us, it’s also one of the biggest investments we’ll ever make. And yet, some of the problems that can affect that home begin somewhere most homeowners rarely see—underneath it.
That’s where Myles and the team at Combat Crawlspace come in. We wanted to know what made him choose this particular industry and, more importantly, what made him want to build his own company within it.
Carolina Content: What inspired you to start your business?
Myles: “I saw an industry where homeowners often didn’t know who to trust or what they actually needed. I wanted to build something based on honesty, quality work, and customer service.”
That answer really became the starting point for our conversation. Think about it. If someone crawls underneath your home and comes back out telling you there’s moisture, mold, a drainage problem, or expensive work that needs to be done, how many homeowners truly know enough about crawlspaces to challenge that recommendation? For most people, you’re relying on the person standing in front of you to be honest.
Myles recognized that, and four years ago, Combat Crawlspace began building its business around it. Today, the company specializes in crawlspace encapsulations, moisture control, mold remediation, drainage systems, sump pumps, dehumidifiers, insulation, v***r barriers, and crawlspace repairs. But when we asked what actually makes Combat Crawlspace different, Myles didn’t give us a sales pitch. In fact, his answer was about not having salesmen at all.
Carolina Content: What makes your business unique?
Myles: “We don’t have salesmen. The person inspecting your crawlspace actually understands the work, and we don’t recommend things you don’t need. Our reputation has been built almost entirely through word of mouth.”
That stood out to us: “We don’t recommend things you don’t need.”
Sometimes a home may need a complete encapsulation. Another may need drainage work, moisture control, mold remediation, or a dehumidifier. Sometimes the problem may be smaller. For Myles, the goal isn’t to turn every inspection into the biggest job possible. It’s to understand what’s happening underneath the home, explain it to the homeowner, and recommend what actually needs to be done.
Some of the standards behind that approach were formed long before Combat Crawlspace existed. Myles is a United States Marine Corps veteran, and when we asked him to tell us a little about himself, he explained how that experience followed him into business ownership.
Myles: “I’m Myles, a Marine Corps veteran and owner of Combat Crawlspace. I took the work ethic and standards I learned in the military and built a company around doing honest work and taking care of people.”
That’s where the title of this spotlight really began to make sense to us: The Standard Built Into Every Job. Not because Combat Crawlspace is defined solely by Myles’ military service, but because some things carry with you from one chapter of life into the next—work ethic, accountability, taking pride in what carries your name, and doing the job correctly even when nobody is standing there watching you do it.
But Myles also learned pretty quickly that being good at the work and being good at owning a business aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Carolina Content: What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner?
Myles: “Learning that doing great work and running a great business are two different skills. There’s been a lot to learn along the way, but we’ve grown without sacrificing our standards.”
And Combat Crawlspace has grown. But much of that growth hasn’t come from traditional advertising. It has come from customers. A homeowner tells a neighbor. A previous customer passes the company’s name to a friend. Someone has a good experience and, months later, when a family member mentions having a crawlspace problem, they know exactly whose number to give them.
That’s why when we asked Myles about his proudest accomplishment, he didn’t point to a dollar amount or the size of the company. He talked about the people willing to put his name in front of someone else.
Carolina Content: What has been your proudest accomplishment so far?
Myles: “The amount of business that comes from previous customers and referrals. When customers trust us enough to put our name in front of their friends and family, that means more than any advertisement.”
When you really think about it, a referral is a pretty powerful thing for a local business. You’re not simply saying somebody did good work. You’re putting a little bit of your own reputation behind theirs. You’re telling somebody you care about, “They took care of my home. I’d trust them with yours.”
For a business that began partly because Myles saw homeowners struggling to know who they could trust, there’s something fitting about trust becoming one of the biggest reasons Combat Crawlspace continues to grow.
We also asked Myles what he enjoys most about serving his community.
Myles: “Helping homeowners solve real problems while also supporting other local and veteran-owned businesses whenever we can.”
As Combat Crawlspace looks toward what’s next, Myles says the company plans to continue growing while strengthening relationships with homeowners, contractors, realtors, and other veteran-owned businesses throughout the area. But before we wrapped up our conversation, we wanted to give him the last word.
Carolina Content: What message would you leave with potential customers?
Myles: “We’re not interested in selling you the biggest job possible. We’re interested in fixing the problem correctly and earning your trust. We served our country, now let us serve you.”
And maybe that’s the best place to end this one. Because underneath every crawlspace Combat Crawlspace works in, there’s a home above it. There’s a family living there. Kids sleeping and playing there. Friends and loved ones gathering there. There’s somebody trusting the people underneath those floors to take care of a place that means far more to them than lumber, insulation, and square footage.
The work may happen where most homeowners will rarely see it, but that doesn’t make the standard behind the work any less important.
For Myles and Combat Crawlspace, that’s the standard built into every job.
