We posted this last year about the time of the ice storm. Hopefully we won’t get hit again but just in case, I thought it would be a good time to share this again. Stay safe everyone!

Hopefully your heat pump doesn’t look as bad as this one, but the weather today and tonight will be the “perfect storm” as far as freezing up your heat pump. The cold freezing rain may freeze on your fan blades causing them to vibrate and shake the unit. If this happens or if you see heavy ice forming around your heat pump you should turn the “emergency” heat on at your thermostat.
Emergency heat only means you are using the heating elements inside your furnace instead of the outdoor heat pump. This will allow the unit to thaw as the outdoor temperature warms up. Don’t forget to turn back to regular or normal heat mode after the ice is gone from the outdoor unit.

For your safety!

For those of you who have gas heat or other gas appliances in your home, now would be a good time to check your carbon monoxide and/or smoke detectors and replace the batteries if needed. Most have a test button to let you know they are working. If you only have smoke detectors and use gas for heat, water heating or cooking, you should purchase the CO detectors as well. The packaging will usually tell you the best places for the detectors in your home.
Smoke and CO detectors have a life span and need to be replaced per the manufacture’s recommendations.
Gas is a great heat source and newer furnaces have many safety features built in. However, it is recommended to use smoke and/or CO detectors with any gas appliance.
Carbon Monoxide is odorless and tasteless so a good working detector is essential.
