WSRCA SAFETY TOOLBOX TOPICS: BREAKING THE STIGMA - MENTAL HEALTH & ADDICTION IN THE TRADES

Let’s talk about a silent crisis that does not show up on a standard OSHA inspection checklist but causes more fatalities in our industry than falls, electrocutions, and struck-by hazards combined: su***de and substance abuse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Addiction Centers consistently report that construction and roofing professionals face the highest rates of addiction and su***de of any major industry sector. This is a hard-nosed business, but ignoring these numbers does not make them go away. Mental wellness is a critical component of job site safety.

WSRCA SAFETY TOOLBOX TOPICS: ACCLIMATIZATION

OSHA has officially shifted its regulatory strategy regarding heat illness with an updated Heat National Emphasis Program (NEP). Compliance officers no longer wait for record-breaking heat waves to inspect a site; they are now authorized to expand any standard job site inspection to look for heat hazards as soon as the ambient temperature hits 80°F. This means if an inspector rolls up to check your fall protection on a relatively mild afternoon, they will also demand to see your written heat illness prevention plan, your water staging, and your training records. This is no longer just about handing out water bottles; it is about having a structured, proactive system in place.

WESTERN ROOFING MAGAZINE - ROOFERS IN RECOVERY - NON-PR0FIT HELPS CONTRACTORS STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION

No one is immune to addiction. It’s a struggle for people in every socio-economic bracket, every age group, and in every industry. Deaths caused by overdosing are at an all-time high, and roofing professionals can often be at risk for developing addiction and substance abuse issues. Addiction and addiction-related depression occur in all levels of the industry, from installers all the way to ownership.

Roofers in Recovery is a Colorado-based non-profit organization that sends addicts through rehabilitation programs and assists families getting back on their feet after suffering the consequences of addiction and substance abuse. The non-profit not only provides scholarships for 100% of the rehab costs, but there is also practical assistance for families so addicts can devote their full efforts on their recovery.

WSRCA SAFETY TOOLBOX TOPICS: LOWERING MATERIAL

We often emphasize the correct methods to hoist items such as shingles, tiles, or buckets of mastic to elevated positions. However, we seldom focus on the intricacies of bringing them down - that is, lowering them from overhead positions safely. This task carries an equal if not greater risk. Just a while ago, a roofer was dismantling an outdated roofing setup. He needed to bring down a bundle of tiles from a shoulder-high stack. Underestimating the weight of the tiles, he found himself unable to control the descent once he lifted them. Consequently, he tumbled to the ground with the tiles crashing atop him, causing severe injuries.

LEGAL NEWS & UPDATES - CFPB's PACE Loan Regulation - What Roofing Contractors Need to Know

Property Assessed Clean Energy financing, commonly known as PACE, has become a familiar funding option for roof replacements, solar installations, energy-efficiency upgrades, and storm-hardening improvements. For roofing contractors, the attraction is practical. PACE can allow a homeowner to proceed with needed work without using a credit card, unsecured loan, or home equity product. The financing is repaid through an assessment on the property tax bill. That structure can make the transaction feel simple at the point of sale, but the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s residential PACE regulation changes the compliance environment by treating covered residential PACE transactions more like mortgage credit under federal consumer finance law.

WSRCA SAFETY TOOLBOX TOPICS: Fire Safety

You are responsible for fire prevention at work, for your safety and that of your co-workers. The best way to prevent fire is to be on the lookout for possible fire hazards. Be aware of potential fire hazards in the workplace. Report hazardous situations to the supervisor. Know the location of fire extinguishers and other emergency equipment that is available to you.
