I stole this from a power company’s post but it’s good info!
If you're planning to use a generator during the upcoming winter storm, follow these important safety rules to keep you and your family safe.
DO: Shut off main breaker before using generators for the safety of your family, friends, first-responders and utility workers.
DON'T: Pull off the electric meter.
For whole-house generators:
• Always hire a licensed electrician or a qualified person to install.
• Schedule a monthly test following manufactured guidelines to ensure reliability when you need it most.
• Know your system's limits and create a priority plan for which appliances to power during outages.
• Remember that DIY installation puts both your family and utility workers at serious risk.
For portable generators:
• Always operate outdoors with at least 20 feet of clearance from any doors, windows, or vents.
• Store fuel properly in designated containers away from living areas and never refuel while the unit is running or hot.
• Perform regular testing per manufacturer recommendations.
• Replace frayed cords, and ensure all connections are clean, tight, and protected from moisture to prevent electrical hazards.
