Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group Inc.

Let’s talk about how to prevent “Struck By” injuries.

These are the most common types of incidents seen on the job site, so there’s no such thing as too many refreshers.

“Struck By” means getting hit by something — tools, equipment, machinery, vehicles — anything that moves with force. These injuries are serious and preventable.

Here’s how to prevent them:

1️⃣ Identify hazards during your daily tailboard. Look for anything that could move, fall, swing, or roll — especially high-energy sources.

2️⃣ Ask: Are there Direct Controls in place? For each hazard, check for safeguards that are specifically designed to protect you from that hazard and will prevent exposure if used correctly. If a hazard doesn’t have a Direct Control, stop and find a solution before work starts.

Let’s look out for each other, stay alert, and stay safe. 🦺

Construction season is ramping up, and that means more work zones on roads across the country. In the MYR Group network of companies, safety is always the top priority—whether you’re behind the wheel or behind the cones.

According to most recent data, collected in 2022, there were 96,000 crashes in work zones, leading to 37,000 injuries and 891 fatalities. These numbers include workers, drivers, and pedestrians—proving that 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

👷‍♂️ Workers: Use proper signage, wear high-vis PPE, and always know your escape route.
🚗 Drivers: Slow down, stay alert, follow signs, and avoid distractions.

Let’s work together to protect our crews, each other, and our communities.

At High Country, Safety is Life.

The weather is warming up, and while that’s generally welcome news, it also brings new hazards such as more active wildlife. It’s important to be mindful of this and know how to safely handle any encounters with wildlife.

Stay aware of your surroundings and alert others if you come across any wildlife risks. We can also take proactive steps to avoid attracting wildlife to our sites by keeping the area clean.

Let’s work together to stay safe this season by keeping ourselves wildlife-wise on our job sites.

Before any digging, boring, or blasting starts on a job site, all underground utilities must be located and marked — no exceptions. Striking a water line, gas line, electric line, sewer line, or communication line isn’t just a setback — it’s a serious safety hazard.

Know the utility color codes:

🔴 Red = Electric | 🟡 Yellow = Gas | 🟠 Orange = Communications | 🔵 Blue = Water | 🟢 Green = Sewer

As you work near a marked utility area, go slowly and carefully and don’t take any chances. Stop what you’re doing to get accurate information and to adjust your plan as needed.

When we hear the word "pinch," we might think of a small pain—but on a construction site, pinch points can cause serious injuries or even be fatal. Whether it's a finger caught in pliers or getting pinned by heavy equipment, these hazards are all around us.

Stay safe by:
✔️ Identifying pinch points before starting work
✔️ Keeping hands and body parts clear of moving objects
✔️ Wearing heavy-duty gloves for extra protection
✔️ Communicating with equipment operators and spotters
✔️ Ensuring machine guards are in place & performing proper lockout/tagout

A split second of awareness can prevent a lifetime of injury. Stay alert, stay safe!

Gravity is always at work, but did you know most workers only recognize 67% of gravity-related hazards? That means out of every three risks, one could go unnoticed!

𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 – an 8 lb. wrench dropped from 200 feet has the same impact as a small car hitting a 1-inch area.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁:
• Secure tools & materials with lanyards, toe boards, or other safety methods.
• Properly store & secure materials in elevated areas.
• Set up barricades & drop zones to protect those below.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱:
• Stay out of marked drop zones & follow posted signs.
• Always be aware of your surroundings—hazards can come from above!

A crucial aspect of a safety-oriented mindset is the ability to look back and analyze past mistakes to better avoid them in the future. Looking back at 2024, Struck By incidents were some of the most common to occur on work sites.
