🪵 Wood or Composite… Which would you choose?

This is one of the most common questions I get from homeowners, and the truth is there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

Wood Decking
✅ Lower upfront cost
✅ Natural wood appearance
✅ Easier to repair one board at a time
❌ Requires regular staining or sealing
❌ More maintenance over time

Composite Decking
✅ Low maintenance
✅ Won’t need staining or painting
✅ Resists rot and insect damage
✅ Available in many colors and textures
❌ Higher upfront cost
❌ Can get hotter in direct sunlight
❌ Usually more expensive to repair or replace

For me, the “best” choice depends on your budget, how much maintenance you’re willing to do, and how you plan to use your deck.

If you were building your dream deck today, which would you choose—wood or composite? Tell me why in the comments!

👇 I’d love to hear your opinion.

Can a beam be any length? Nope. Every beam has a maximum span based on its size, the lumber used, and the weight it's designed to support. That's why proper post spacing is so important. Follow along for the next Deck School lesson!

The beam (or girder) is one of the hardest-working parts of your deck. It supports the joists and transfers the load to the posts below. Without a properly built beam, the rest of the deck can't do its job. Next, I'll explain why beam span matters.

Not all deck posts are the same. Many modern decks use 6×6 posts because they provide greater strength and stiffness than smaller posts. Choosing the right size depends on the deck's design and load requirements.

Your deck is only as strong as the path the weight follows. Posts play a critical role by transferring the load from the beams down to the footings. Tomorrow, we'll look at why many decks use 6×6 posts. What deck topic should I cover next?

A simple picnic table can become the center of a backyard. 🍔☀️

Built this one from scratch, and I love how it turned out. There’s something satisfying about turning a pile of lumber into a place where memories will be made.

What backyard project should I build next? 👇
