This one turned into a true showpiece!

What started as an overgrown island in the middle of the driveway has been completely transformed into a natural boulder garden designed to make a statement from every direction.

We incorporated large Virginia fieldstone boulders to create a natural rock outcropping, added a winding gravel pathway through the center, and worked new plant material throughout the existing mature trees to keep the landscape looking established and natural.

Instead of removing everything and starting over, we worked with what was already there and gave the entire space a new purpose.

The best part is this landscape is just getting started. As the plants establish and begin filling around the stone, this island will continue to get better every year.

This backyard was a blank slate, and we had the opportunity to completely transform it into a space for the entire family to enjoy.

The project included Virginia fieldstone boulder walls, Grey Crab Orchard stone steps, River Jack gravel, new landscape beds and plantings, and a one-of-a-kind natural playground built into the hillside.

For the playground, we incorporated large natural boulders, logs, sand, a custom log climbing structure, and a 36” pipe running 20’ underground to create a tunnel the kids can crawl through and explore.

We wanted this project to feel natural and blend into the surrounding property while creating something completely different from a traditional backyard.

A lot of moving pieces went into this one, but seeing the finished product made it worth it. And once the new landscaping matures and fills in, it’s only going to get better! Almost complete!!!!

From slope to usable space

This natural boulder retaining wall was built to create additional flat area for the homeowners’ boat trailer parking while fitting naturally into the wooded setting.

Before finishing the grade, we also installed a 1,000-gallon fresh water storage system connected to the well and feeding the home.

A lot happening behind the scenes on this one—and up next this fall: planting to bring it all together!

Another project taking shape!
We recently completed the first phase of this NC boulder wall, creating the foundation for what will become a beautiful tiered retaining wall system. Using natural boulders sourced right here in NC, the goal is to create a structure that blends seamlessly into the landscape while providing long-term stability and function.
The next phase will include additional tiers, grading, and landscape enhancements to soften the wall and give it a natural mountain-inspired appearance.
There's something special about turning a steep slope into a usable, attractive space that looks like it's always been there.

FROM THIS ➡️ TO THAT.
What started as a rough construction area is quickly turning into one of the most unique outdoor living spaces we've had the opportunity to build.
We installed a custom Virginia Boulder wall to create a natural transition between elevations while providing the foundation for future landscape beds and outdoor living areas. The goal was to make it look like it has always belonged there—and I think we're getting pretty close.

Landscape Plantings
This project has been a lot of fun, and it's shaping up to be one sweet property when it's all said and done.
