Gardening and processing our own food is one of my favorite things to do.

We're a little late, but life has been busy around here.

We're getting ready for sick season and making some things to have on hand. Today we made fire cider! ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿง„

Ours is a little darker because I didn't have turmeric root, just turmeric powder. But hopefully it still turns out good! Now we just have to let it sit for a few weeks. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Tomorrow we plan to make fermented honey garlic.

We hauled 10 calves off to the stockyard yesterday, and 10 today. ๐Ÿ„

The cows ainโ€™t too happy about it, and theyโ€™re letting the whole neighborhood know!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Gonna be a loud few days around here with all the bawlinโ€™. Sorry for all the ruckus, folks! ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ„

I wasn't about to give up! After countless attempts, I think I've finally found a sandwich bread recipe that's just about right. It's been a lot of trial and error, but every loaf has taught me something. Nothing beats filling the kitchen with the smell of fresh bread and seeing the family reach for another slice. ๐Ÿž

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿค— Briar finally took me out today to show me what he found, and look what we got... MULLEIN!
Now, I know some of y'all were probably expecting something a little more exciting, but around here this stuff is pure gold! ๐Ÿ’›

Mullein has been used for generations and is one of my favorite wild plants to find. We're going to gather some leaves and dry them out. It can be used in teas, tinctures, and other traditional herbal preparations. The flowers are often used in homemade ear oil, too.

This is actually a second-year mullein plant. From what I've heard, the first-year plants are usually preferred and are considered more potent, but second-year plants can still have benefits and useful leaves as well.

One of my favorite things about homesteading is learning about the plants God put right under our feet. Sometimes the best treasures aren't found in a storeโ€”they're growing right along the edge of a field. ๐ŸŒฟ

Good job, Briar! He sure knows how to make his momma happy. โค๏ธ

Well, Barbie finally had her calf, and that's a wrap on calving season for this year!

We was supposed to end up with 40 calves, but the cows had other plans. Kathy-24 fooled us all and wasn't pregnant. Ol Blue and her calf packed their bags and left the farm, and we sadly lost 3 calves along the way.

Even with a few surprises and bumps in the road, we're mighty thankful to be lookin' out across the field at 35 healthy calves kickin, buckin, growin, and raisin dust. Not every calving season goes exactly as planned, but that's farm life. You take the good with the bad and keep on goin.

We're blessed to have 35 healthy calves out there, and that's somethin to be thankful for. Now it's time to put the calving supplies away, trade calf watch for hay season, and get ready for whatever adventure this old farm has in store for us next!

๐Ÿคฃ I seen this porch goose sittin' there all by its lonesome...

I told myself, "Sara, you don't need that goose." Then I realized it was the last one, and next thing I knew it was ridin' shotgun on the way home. ๐Ÿชฟ๐Ÿ˜‚

Now I'm finding out these things ain't just porch decorations. Apparently they're supposed to have outfits for every holiday, season, and probably deer season too. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฃ

So where's everybody gettin' their goose clothes? I got a feelin' this goose is about to be dressed better than I am.

Yesterday, Briar was out riding the side-by-side and came in grinning from ear to ear. ๐Ÿ˜ He said, "Mom, I found something for you!" ๐Ÿ’š

The second he said that, I already knew what it had to be. My baby knows me so well. ๐Ÿฅนโค๏ธ

This weekend is packed, so I won't get to see it until Monday when he takes me to it. To most people, it'll probably look like just another w**d... but to me, it's GOLD. ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

So, take a guess! What do you think Briar found? If you're right, I'll tell you (and show you!) on Monday. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’• We now have two first-time mommas on the farm!

One hen is proudly caring for 10 chicks, and the other has 4 little babies following her around. So far, both of them seem to be doing a wonderful job, and I could sit and watch them for hours.

It's amazing how much instinct these hens have. From keeping their babies close to teaching them how to scratch and explore, they're proof that some of the best lessons in life come straight from nature. ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ’• Father's Day surprise! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฎ

Betsy decided to make Father's Day a little extra special and surprised us this morning with this pretty little heifer calf. Momma and baby are both doing great, and we couldn't ask for a better way to start the day.

There's just something special about seeing a healthy new calf out in the pasture. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ’• Momma has 2 chicks so far, and sheโ€™s as mean as a rattlesnake! You can't get anywhere near her without getting fussed at. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'd say she's taking her job very seriously and is already proving she's going to be a good momma. Here's hoping there are more little fluff balls on the way! ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’›
