The Morris Post Office project was by far one of our largest projects to date.

Over the years, the areas outside the post office were becoming very overgrown and quite straggly-looking. They were also becoming difficult to keep clean with weeding. We consulted with many people for guidance on a plan. We came up with a plan that was simple and pleasing to the eye.

In the fall of 2024, all plants and shrubs were removed, and the areas were left bare for the winter. Several of the plants were wintered over and used for the project in the spring.

In June of 2025, Rollie Henrichs and his crew completed the planting of the some new and saved perennials and shrubs. We had asked Randee Hokanson for her expertise on the landscape design. Mulch was also added at that time (ongoing). The annuals were then added in later by the garden club members. (will be done each year)

The club thanks everyone for their support and kind words about the project. It takes a lot of moving parts to complete large projects such as this. No matter if you’ve said a kind word, gratitude while we are weeding, or monetary support through the brat stand we had, farmers market purchases, or purchased at our plant sales, we thank YOU!! 🌺

The second location of gardens maintained by the garden club is the Morris Public Library. Here you will find the gazebo and also the garden areas next to the library entrance.

The area around the gazebo offers a simple and charming area. In May of 2020, this area underwent a complete re-do. The previous plants were overgrown and were hard to maintain with weeding, etc. Some members took on the task of digging out all of the plants to make the area bare in the fall of 2019 to prepare for the following spring. We had Max’s Landscaping help with a design, and his crew completed the work. It is much easier to maintain. There is a mixture of shrubs and perennials. Another thing I need to mention is the beautiful barn quilt attached to the gazebo (I need to check to see where that originated). Also, the gazebo itself is maintained by the Lions Club. (The origin of this was either the Lions or Kiwanis group). We are so fortunate to have this structure. It’s great for all ages!

The other areas by the library entrance have their own appeal. The one side (left as you walk into the library) has many types of lilies of all colors and a few other perennials. The right side contains mostly hostas which seem to give its own soothing subtle look. These areas may undergo an ā€œeditā€, as one member calls it, in the future.

We hope that you can sit in the gazebo with a coffee or a lunch and just enjoy the beauty!

Did you know the Pomme de Terre Garden Club maintains several areas within the City of Morris? I will share them in a series of ā€œBeautiful Gardensā€.

Have you noticed the ā€œpocket gardensā€ behind City Center Mall? These are mostly planned out and maintained by one of our members. The club provides plants and monetary support as needed for these beautiful and colorful areas.

Go take a look at these areas more closely sometime. They are so very detailed with many kinds of flowers and plants! Just stunning!

Our club enjoys promoting horticulture and gardening to all ages and all experience levels. We truly appreciate the community support. New members always welcome!
