In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we reflect on the role thoughtful design plays in supporting behavioral health and wellness.

At NK Architects, our healthcare practice is committed to creating environments that promote dignity, safety and healing across the full continuum of behavioral health care, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities, crisis intervention spaces, substance use treatment centers and beyond.

This extends into the emergency department, where we design specialized behavioral health treatment areas that help reduce stress, anxiety and sensory overload for patients experiencing mental health crises, while still supporting clinical safety, visibility and efficient care delivery.

Across all project types, our work is guided by evidence-based design principles that balance safety with warmth, natural light and calming materials, helping to create spaces that support both patients and care teams during some of their most vulnerable moments.

We are proud to contribute to environments that advance mental health care and strengthen the communities they serve.

Strong partnerships are an important part of creating thoughtful, impactful spaces. Yesterday evening, attended a customer appreciation event hosted by Diversified at TD Bank Ballpark, where the Somerset Patriots took on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

Opportunities like these allow us to strengthen connections with the manufacturers and collaborators who help bring the beautifully crafted interior environments we design to life.

A special thank you to Paul Gibeault and Matthew Kenny for the invitation and continued partnership!

Walter Kneis and Marlene Borruso recently attended the NJAIS Leadership Conference, an event we look forward to each year for its thoughtful workshops, engaging discussions, and valuable industry insights.

Beyond the programming, one of the most rewarding aspects of the conference is the opportunity to reconnect with the independent school administrators and educators we’ve had the privilege of getting to know over the years. We’re grateful for the conversations, shared ideas, and continued partnerships that make this community so meaningful.

Each year, our healthcare leadership team looks forward to attending the 11th Greater NY Hospital, Outpatient Facilities & Medical Office Buildings Summit, and this year was no exception.

Beyond connecting with industry peers and discussing the evolving challenges shaping how care is delivered, we were especially proud to support our colleague Ed Goytia, who contributed to the conversation as a panelist on “Integrating Behavioral Health Care & Medical Facilities.” With more than 50% of provider organizations now integrating behavioral and physical health services, the discussion explored how this shift is reshaping care delivery models and influencing the design, construction, technology and operations of healthcare environments.

Thank you to Corporate Realty, Design & Management Institute, Association of Medical Facility Professionals and the national, regional and local sponsors for presenting and supporting this impactful event.

Members of our Education Practice leadership team will be attending the SCUP Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference starting next Monday, joining peers across higher education to explore this year’s theme: navigating transformation to drive growth.

As institutions respond to shifting enrollment, evolving student expectations and new models of partnership, the conversation around integrated planning and resilient campus environments feels especially timely.

• Daniel Topping, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
• Marlene Borruso, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador

We’re looking forward to engaging with colleagues on how thoughtful planning and design can support institutions as they adapt and evolve. If you’re planning to attend, please reach out if you’d like to connect while we’re there.

NK Architects was proud to join the Oak Knoll community in celebrating the groundbreaking of a project that will bring the school’s “Our Second Century” campus vision to life, building on a legacy more than 100 years in the making.

With more than 650 students, faculty, alumni and community members gathered in celebration, the energy on campus reflected a shared excitement for what's ahead. The event marked the start of a transformative project featuring new and renovated academic spaces, an innovation lab, expanded wellness and athletic facilities and thoughtfully designed gathering areas that strengthen connection and collaboration.

We’re proud to partner with Oak Knoll to help shape a campus that reflects the school’s values and supports how its community comes together each day.

Penn Cardiology and Family Medicine Chestnut Hill brings cardiology and primary care together within a consolidated outpatient setting designed to support clarity, efficiency and future growth.

Using Penn Medicine’s IPD lite delivery approach, early coordination among the design team, builders and clinical stakeholders shaped a fit-out that integrates specialized cardiology equipment, upgraded infrastructure and life safety requirements from the outset. Across both levels of the program, planning emphasizes clear circulation, efficient workflows and a patient focused experience while remaining consistent with Penn Medicine’s outpatient design standards.

Project Partners:
• General Contractor: HSC Builders & Construction Managers
• Structural Engineer: O'Donnell & Naccarato
• MEP/FP Engineer: TLC Engineering Solutions
