We’re excited to announce that our CEO, Andrew Lewis, will be speaking at BISNOW’s Hospital Campuses & Ambulatory Centers: New Projects & Expansions.

The panel will explore how New Jersey health systems are balancing strategic campus expansion with distributed outpatient care—and how adaptive reuse and thoughtful repositioning of existing assets can create long-term value for healthcare providers and the communities they serve.

In conversation with Gensler’s Siobhan Barry and moderated by MSKCC’s Suzen Heeley, the discussion explores how human-centered, sensory-informed design can create healthcare environments that better support people of all ages, abilities, and sensory needs. We were excited to welcome three rising seniors from Delbarton School to our Morristown office as part of the school’s annual DelEX Program, an externship initiative that gives students the opportunity to explore potential career paths and gain firsthand exposure to professional environments as they prepare to apply for college and plan their future careers.

The day began with introductions from our current summer interns, who shared their academic backgrounds, experiences entering the profession and what drew them to architecture and engineering. Marlene Borruso then led a presentation titled “What is Architecture,” offering students an overview of how design, collaboration and problem-solving shape the built environment.

Additional team members from across the firm presented projects and perspectives related to their individual roles, including architectural design, project management, interior design and structural engineering.

Thank you to everyone from our team who volunteered their time and helped make the experience engaging, informative and inspiring for the next generation of professionals.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we reflect on the role thoughtful design plays in supporting behavioral health and wellness.

At NK Architects, our healthcare practice is committed to creating environments that promote dignity, safety and healing across the full continuum of behavioral health care, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities, crisis intervention spaces, substance use treatment centers and beyond.

This extends into the emergency department, where we design specialized behavioral health treatment areas that help reduce stress, anxiety and sensory overload for patients experiencing mental health crises, while still supporting clinical safety, visibility and efficient care delivery.

Across all project types, our work is guided by evidence-based design principles that balance safety with warmth, natural light and calming materials, helping to create spaces that support both patients and care teams during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Strong partnerships are an important part of creating thoughtful, impactful spaces. Yesterday evening, attended a customer appreciation event hosted by Diversified at TD Bank Ballpark, where the Somerset Patriots took on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

Opportunities like these allow us to strengthen connections with the manufacturers and collaborators who help bring the beautifully crafted interior environments we design to life.

Walter Kneis and Marlene Borruso recently attended the NJAIS Leadership Conference, an event we look forward to each year for its thoughtful workshops, engaging discussions, and valuable industry insights.

Beyond the programming, one of the most rewarding aspects of the conference is the opportunity to reconnect with the independent school administrators and educators we’ve had the privilege of getting to know over the years.
