Time for a mid-project post! 🔨💪🪏

This property overlooks our beautiful Morro Bay estuary, a benefit with a few wild obstacles to tame.

One challenge was the home backing up to an erosive bluff that descends sharply to the bay. Though picturesque, this meant the homeowners had no usable backyard space to relax and take in the scenery.

Our solution was a winding timber staircase that harmonizes with the contours of the surrounding dunes. Local serpentine cobble packs the stairs and edges the two terraces, one of which will support a custom redwood slab bench swing, while the other will create an upper-view patio retained with Belgard’s “Belair Wall.”

Designed to encourage time outdoors, this landscape both embraces and enhances the beauty of the Central Coast. A meandering DG path winds through the garden before opening onto a paver patio featuring a fire bowl by local concrete artisan Maysun Wells. Hardy succulents, California natives, and proteas provide year-round texture while keeping garden care and water use to a minimum 💧🪏🙌. As they mature, the California bay, avocado, and citrus trees will soften the south-facing block wall with shade, beauty, and seasonal bounty 🥑🍊🍋. Brushed-bronze landscape lighting extends the garden’s warmth into the evening, highlighting the sculptural trunks of the arbutus and tree aloe while softly illuminating the walkways after dark.

This South County abode has an elegant modern presence, so we complemented its aesthetic with unique specimen cacti and succulents. Upright columnar cacti now accent the home’s cylindrical turret, while oversized barrel cactus anchor the scene. Since fire is a real risk in areas of SLO County, the water-filled succulents provide a fire break, working passively alongside the perimeter sprinklers installed as fire suppressants. ✌️♥️🌵

Naturalistic landscape design shapes this Los Osos garden into a quiet, functional space for herbalists and herbivores alike. The homeowners’ interest in medicinal herbs and flowers is reflected in raised beds edged with local serpentine cobble. A live-edge redwood bench offers a place to pause between tending and reflection, while the elevated beds provide easy access and a sandy retreat for the family’s trio of tortoises. 🐢🐢🐢

This was a full-scale landscape transformation with all the features to make a comfortable and dynamic space for multi-family enjoyment. Lighting, firepit, no-mow meadow, terraced patios, a built-in spa deck—and fun, colorful plants, of course 🌱

This 2nd story deck is these Morro Bay homeowners’ only outdoor space, so they wanted a lush feel with lots of planters. Enter these tall, narrow planters—just the solution for a tighter space. Bonus: they’re made of resin so they won’t be affected by the salt air 🌊🌱🙌

Greetings, Central Coast family! We’ve taken an extended rest from posting on socials, but we’re happy to reconnect full circle as spring returns once again. For the last few years, we’ve been developing the demonstration garden at our Santa Margarita haven, and connecting our family with the natural world. We’ve also had fun installing some awesome hardscape and carpentry alongside the eclectic mix of striking Mediterranean species we’re known for 🙌 Excited to share the bounty and get back in the dirt with you all 🪴♥️☀️🌱🌻

Salud Plant people 🙌
We are all experiencing this record breaking winter abundance with our rains this year. Yes, there has been flooding tragedies, and we pray for those that have been impacted 🙏 On the whole, reservoirs are very happy, snow pack is immense and creeks that have been dry for years are flowing freely and many have turned into rivers 🌊🌊

With an hour more sun time and the eminent equinox it feels like we are rising out a darker challenging period of the last couple years with nature leading the way. The hills couldn’t be any greener, wildflower season will be a masterpiece all its own, and the plants are pulsing to life reminding us that hope springs eternal ✨

At GBG, we encourage you to take daily time outside to bask in the brilliance and manifest magnificence this year 🌿🌼💚

GBG celebrates all life forms big and small! Fungi are the grand recyclers and form an intimate part of the soil food web. They work together with many other micro flora to cycle nutrients and make them available to our plant roots. We have had fun cultivating different medicinal and gourmet varieties for their health boosting effects with the brain (Lions Mane) Nervous and Immune System toner 😌(Reishi) and high protein deliciousness (oyesters) 😋
My side project, .foods has teamed up with Simone at to bring you a mushroom cultivation workshop where you can assemble a terrarium kit in class and fruit them at home. Make fantastic fungi a part of your fall happenings and join us Saturday Oct. 16th!

Happy post-equinox Friday ☀️🍁We tuned up this built-in Ipe seat wall today to be a therapeutic family spa zone. Good collaboration with — thanks for pouring the sunken spa vault and wall! Many waterwise plants to go in to green this expansive backyard up. Stay tuned!
