Our goal is simple. When we are done, you never knew we were there.

That is what quality masonry restoration looks like.

At the 11 story Moon Towers Building in Galesburg, Illinois, Otto Baum Company, Inc. has been doing a full scope of repairs to preserve the structure while maintaining its original appearance.

Work has included:
• Grinding and repointing deteriorated mortar joints
• Replacement of spalled and cracked brick
• Shelf angle and sealant repairs
• Lintel cleaning and painting
• Flashing repairs and weep replacement
• Concrete crack injection and patching

Credit to Foreman Corey Link and crew members Dylan Link, Dave Schisler, and Scott Schuyler for executing this work with precision.

Next up, the 8 story tower.

From Plans to Progress: Featuring Parrish Young, Masonry General Superintendent
Sometimes the best career moves start with a tough reality and a leap of faith.
After years of running his own business, Masonry General Superintendent Parrish Young found himself at a crossroads. As trusted crew members began reaching retirement, his team quickly shrank from 20 to just 6 in only two years. Rebuilding that same level of workforce proved challenging, but it opened the door to something new.
“I had heard a lot of good things about OBCI and decided to give them a call. Six years later, it turned out to be one of the best calls I ever made.”
Owning his own company shaped the way Parrish leads today. It gave him firsthand experience working with all types of people, both employees and customers, and that perspective shows in how he guides his crews.
At the heart of it all, what matters most?
“Knowing the crew has delivered the best quality project possible in an efficient and safe manner. And that they feel proud to have been part of it.”
That pride, paired with practical wisdom, is something he is intentional about passing down.
“Not everything is going to go as planned. You have to stay calm, don’t lose your cool, and be ready to move to Plan B and sometimes C and D.”
And on the long days, Parrish stays grounded in perspective:
“A positive attitude goes a long way. Even after the worst days, it is going to get better and the project is going to get done.”
From experience to leadership and from challenges to progress, that is what this series is all about.

Welcome to Turning Plans Into Progress, our new spotlight series shining a light on the General Superintendents who lead our crews, drive our projects, and keep OBCI building strong every single day.

Our first feature is about Tim Gashaw, General Superintendent for the Concrete division. Tim's story at Otto Baum started before most careers even begin. He first walked through our doors as a high school student in a co-op class and never looked back. Over 25 years later, he's still here, still growing, and still proud to be part of a company that focuses on doing the job right and delivering a quality product.

When asked about his favorite project, the answer came easy: the OSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, in its entirety. A project that represents the scale, complexity, and craftsmanship that OBCI is known for.

The biggest lesson Tim has learned along the way? How to work with a wide variety of people with all different skill sets and personalities. In construction, that skill is everything.

Tim credits Todd Johnson as the most influential person in his career. From helping Todd build his house and learning hands-on carpentry skills, to the everyday mentorship and support, Todd has shaped Tim's experience in a big way. And yes, he even showed Tim where to find the best ice cream shops.

Tim's advice for anyone just starting out at OBCI:
"You need to learn from others, even when they're not actively teaching you. Pay attention to how people approach their work, what works well and what doesn't, and use that to help shape the path you want to take. Stay humble and understand that you'll never know everything. Be open to advice from anyone, regardless of their role or experience level."

Thank you, Tim, for 25 years of dedication, craftsmanship, and leadership. Here's to many more!

Every strong estimate starts with experience and attention to detail, and for Charlie Vins, those lessons came early.

One of the biggest takeaways he learned the hard way? Not slowing down enough to fully review documents and ask questions when something doesn’t feel right. Missing a detail before bid submission is a tough lesson, but one that’s shaped how he approaches every project today.

Now serving as the Regional Manager for Restoration in the Chicagoland area, Charlie plays a key role in growing the business and expanding our presence in the market. His leadership is grounded in real-world experience and a clear understanding of what it takes to successfully deliver projects from the ground up.

While estimating may not have been his original path, Charlie’s background in the field and project management brings a unique perspective. When building an estimate, he doesn’t just look at numbers. He visualizes the entire project, from setup to ex*****on, as if he were the one doing the work. That level of connection makes every bid meaningful. So when a project isn’t awarded, it’s a tough loss. But when that call comes through every several bids, it makes the win that much more rewarding.

What sets estimating here apart? The depth and thoroughness behind every estimate. It’s not just about putting together numbers, it’s about preparing a complete, well thought-out plan for success.

And on bid day, Charlie keeps it simple and direct. If he’s focused, you’ll hear something like, “I’m in the middle of something with a deadline, let’s circle back shortly.” And if needed, a quick point to the clock makes the message clear.

Because when it comes to bid day, focus matters.

This Memorial Day, we pause with grateful hearts to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have today, and their legacy lives on through the families and loved ones they left behind. In observance of Memorial Day, our office will be closed as we take this time to reflect, remember, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As a fourth-generation Baum and great-grandson of Otto, Derek Baum brings a strong field mindset to estimating, especially when a project calls for problem-solving and precision. He’s drawn to work that challenges him, projects with complex logistics or unique repairs that require a deeper level of thinking and experience.
When things shift late in the game, Derek keeps it simple: stay calm and adjust quickly. He believes taking the time to fully review changes, (even if it means working nights or weekends) is always worth it to get the details right the first time.
That attention to detail is strengthened by the people around him. Derek leans heavily on foremen and superintendents for their real-time, hands-on insight, along with the shared experience of the restoration estimating team. It’s a collaborative approach that helps ensure nothing gets overlooked.
While waiting to hear if a bid was successful has its own tension, Derek will tell you the real pressure comes on bid day. With timelines tightening and details stacking up, staying focused is critical to avoid mistakes and finish strong.
Derek’s approach is steady and grounded in experience, built on knowing the work, trusting the team, and putting in the time to get it right.
Sharp estimates. Steady approach. Great hair. Not saying it’s all connected...but we’re not ruling it out either.
