These high winds on the Palouse can take a toll on your roof! This customer reached out for a replacement after this tree punched a few holes in their roof. We were able to help them establish a timeline that worked with their insurance as well as coordinate directly with their insurance to ensure contracted repair to the soffits was covered. Our client's roof was showing signs of age, with frequent ridge cap blow offs and worn out shingles. Further inspection found that the rafters were installed without collar ties, and a poorly sistered rafter created a sizable dip in the roof.

To address these issues, we installed framing and collar ties throughout the attic to get the sheathing and rafters back into plane. The entire roof was removed before reinstalling a new, high quality Malarkey roofing system. The existing chimney flashing was removed and painted black to better tie in to the new roof.

This could be hiding under your roof...
.. only if your attic doesn't have the proper ventilation installed. This client's home had bathroom and kitchen fans exhaust into the attic. To make things worse, the ridge cap had been covered for years, trapping moisture and heat inside the attic.

We replaced all of their damaged sheathing, installed new vent caps, and ran ducting from each of their fans. Now, all of their fans exhaust outside of the roof, as they should.

Have you noticed snow sitting in the valleys of your roof, or watched water drain down it during a storm? Your roof funnels a lot of water to the valleys, so we add a couple of extra layers of protection here when we install a new roof. A layer of metal protects the seam where sheets of plywood meet, and a layer of ice and water shield blocks any water that makes underneath the shingles. This leaves you with a beautiful and watertight valley that looks great from the street.

Roof valleys are one of the most common leak locations , so we take extra care to make sure they’re sealed tight. A roof valley is where two planes of your roof intersect. Valleys see a larger amount of water and can wear out faster than other sections of your roof.

Here on the Palouse we have high winds throughout the year, snow and ice that melts and freezes several times during the winter, and high temperatures in the summer.

Because of this, your roofing material needs to do several things:

It needs to be securely fastened to the roof so that high winds don’t blow shingles off and expose the underlayment beneath.

It needs to allow water to flow off quickly without pooling on the roof. Spring rains in Moscow & Pullman can dump more water on your roof than you’d think, so a leak-proof roof is really important to the safety of your home.

It needs to protect against ice dams that are common in our area. We do this with a layer of ice and water shield at the eaves.

It needs to be able to withstand high temperatures. A hot roof "cooks" your shingles and affects their lifespan and durability.

It needs to be able to withstand freezing and thawing cycles. Water seeps into cracks and expands when it freezes, widening the cracks and creating entries for water into your home.

When it's time to replace your roof, make sure it's installed by a knowledgeable contractor that uses quality materials.
